This showed up in my e-mail This morning:
Hi there San Diego Riders! I want to thank you all for being so wonderful to ride with....these wacky rides are simply the joy in my life. I swear I have some kind of guardian angel. This is my third incident with a pick-up truck.
The first one was in Swaziland, Africa. A pick-up turned right in front of me on a 35mph downhill. I took out its front quarter panel, its windshield and ended up flying onto the pavement. I ended up with NOTHING...not a scratch on me...just a big bruise on my hip, a taco'd wheel and bent forks. I was back on my bike in 36 hours (took that long to get my bike repaired).
The second incident was a pickup truck on the 101 Fwy north of Ventura on the Grand Tour Triple Century ride. The truck came zooming past me across the white line and smacked me with his mirror...my saving grace on that one was it was a folding mirror and it snapped back (and hopefully broke his window). I don't know how, but I managed to stay on my bike and finish the ride with just a bruise on my arm. (thanx again to that guardian angel!)
Saturday's accident was bizarre. The driver told me that he had just come around a corner, was going 15 mph and his dog jumped in his lap so he couldn't see me. Strange...'cause I was at the top of the straight climb and there were no corners. Also, if he was going only 15 mph, I don't think I would have wiped out his front grill! But the good news is, that although I have 4 fractured vertebrae, they are not serious and surgery is probably not an issue...the worst part are the torn ligaments in my back, which will probably take longer to heal than the vertebrae. I will be in a back brace for about 3 months. They claim I will be off my bike 6 months to a year...well, I know that is hogwash....I heal very quickly and my goal is to be back in training in no longer than 4 months. The doctors cannot believe how little injury I ended up with and they will also not believe how quickly I'm going to recover!
The good news is that if I can't ride the rides, at least I can help staff the rides, and still get my vicarious enjoyment.
So...all of you...please ride as safe as you can and enjoy every minute of your ride....I am sending my guardian angel watches over all of you as well!
Big hug to one and all.... Bobbi Fisher
