    Emily,
Thanks for your post! The helmet is probably a good idea as trees are coming down left and right. I've never experienced that before, but the power is still on. The AmerenUE trucks are all over the place and they put cones out in the middle of the road where there may be a potential problem with a line and a tree, and they are watching these spots. It's very interesting and they are really on top of things. These guys said they would be out all night making sure the power stays on. (Small town, we know everyone) I'll have to let UE know I appreciate their efforts. I'm sure they get very few compliments!!!

    Raindrop,
I read your posts about your brother in the fall, and I'm so glad you are remembering your brother this way! It certainly takes a long time for the pain to ease over something like this, (I know - father- 16 years ago), but never doubt where they are right now!

    Update

The ice is STILL here and we haven't had school all week. Power is not restored yet. My power stayed on, but I am in the minority. Most people have wood stoves or gas heating but my friends all come over to watch tv and SHOWER. They can't stay long as they have to make sure that the pipes don't freeze. Every evening my son has had a roomfull of teenagers playing xbox...

Emily, I have to tell you that I walked downtown this weekend (I just HAD to get some exercise) and when I got there, I thought about what you said about it being dangerous to go outside. It wasn't too bad around my house, but in town some lines were down, laying in the road, and I watched tree limbs crash around me and I thought "I am soooooooooo stupid to be out here". It looked like a tornado hit. How did your trees fare after the ice? Some trees here are losing most of their limbs. The ice is still on them. Are they going to survive?

Anyone else have this $%^&* ice?

Emily, we had ice that year in Virginia, too! We hardly ever get large amounts of snow, but because - I suppose - we're near the coast - we get lots of ice. Power was out for thousands of folks (my daughter and family included) for three weeks!
We've had a really easy winter so far, with temps more like spring than winter, but I think that's changing... temps in the teens and it's snowing now...

Everybody, be safe, it'll be over soon...

ps... has anyone noticed that the days are really getting longer?? I looked out yesterday afternoon and it was 5:15 and still very much light... not too long ago it was very dark by 5 p.m.!

ok ok I know I'm reaching here... but a little hope!

Jeannie - it's snowing in Richmond???? aaaaaaaak! No snow up here yet - but cloudy and chilly - about 22 degrees this morning when I left the house.

I hear there is more in store for the southern plains - everyone, like Jeannie said, please be safe!

And yes, the days are getting longer *Jane is doing the happy dance*

Oh, you RICHMOND people. I have a friend who moved there in September. Every day for the past week she has called and given me the temperature. On Monday while it was -5 windchill here, she had to tell me when the 66.8 temp changed by a tenth of a degree while we were catching up. Tuesday she indicated that it was a cold snap in the 40s. I told her what she could do with her cold snap. I'm not sure I would know how to handle it if the temp got above freezing...

Claudia - don't be too upset with us in VA - this has been a VERY UNUSUAL winter! It's catching up with us now, though still not as bad as you have had it.

    Stay warm!

I was in Richmond that winter of the two major snowstorms... I remember them finding the frozen people when it finally melted Folks had gone out to their mailboxes andsuch, fallen... and didnt get up.

Looks like potential for some really messy stuff for the mid-atlantic coming up!! Collect those power bars and water...

Yes!! I've definitely noticed that. I usually leave work between 5:15 and 5:30, and where before Christmas it was pitch dark at that time, it's now downright bright if the day is not seriously overcast. Spring is coming, huh??? (Though you wouldn't know it by today! And another "wintry mix" forecast for Sunday!!!)

Emily - our forecast up here is for snow Sunday....and tomorrow is supposed to be sunny, mid-30's with 40 mph gusts......looks like a trainer weekend I suppose I have gotten quickly spoiled by the winter-with-spring-weather we have been having!

Didn't know what this thread was about due to title, so I'm way late . . . but let me just say you New Englanders are welcome to take your winter back from us. Usually when it snows here it only sticks around for a couple of days, the sun comes out and melts everything quickly. However we still have a ton of snow everywhere from the blizzards before and after Christmas. Did I mention I actually got a day off of work weeks after that just because the 80 mph wind blew the snow back into the roads making travel treacherous. Then on top of the wind and snow, the high last Saturday was 9 F. Today its 28, sunny but windy, and dropping below 0 every night this week. Arg! We always get weather like this every winter, but not for an entire MONTH! I walk around in a constant state of fear of slipping on the ice everywhere (my yak trax are on back order).

Sooooo looking forward to my trip to AZ to see the parents and in-laws at the end of the month.

I don't think we had any trees die as a result of losing limbs from the ice storm, as I recall, anyway. Now if a tree loses most/all it's limbs, that is probably a different story, we just had scattered limbs here and there, not all off one tree.

So sorry you're still suffering with the ice. It sounds terrible! We finally got our first little snow this morning (after 70 degrees on Sunday!), just 1" and very pretty. Much, much better than ice. I've been seeing the footage from Mo. on the news, and it looks horrendous. What a winter this has been for so many!

Hope you thaw out very soon, but it will take months to clean up all the damage. I remember seeing piles of branches by the road waiting for pickup months after our storm here. Same as after Hurricane Fran....
