Our New Year's Eve Celebration - late night dinner and a movie in bed. Dinner was popcorn and champagne. They actually go well together.

Glenmorangie, 15 year. He usually gets the 12 year, but the description of the 15 made it sound good, so I made him get both.

If you ever get the chance, go stay at Albion River Inn near Mendocino and do a scotch tasting. You don't actually have to stay there, but it makes it easy to totter off to bed after tasting a bunch of different scotches.

I've heard about the Albion River Inn tasting - it's on the list of weekends to save up for!

I like the Islay malts in particlar, the smokier/peatier/more phonolic the better, but most people don't like those as much (more for me!)

Has Thom ever tried the Old Potrero single malt rye whiskey? It's made by the Anchor Brewing company (the ones who make Anchor Steam beer) and wow is it intense!

Aha! Maybe so - here's the litmus test - do you like Ardbeg? Most people I have tried it with really don't like it, and one friend compared it to "Carmex in a glass" (granted, he's not a scotch appreciator). But I love it - too bad it is so hard to find.

He pretty much sticks to Glenmorangie. It's too expensive to buy something you might not like.

That made the tasting really cool though because we did determine that he does not like the Islay ones.

That's the problem with those single malts - they are so darn expensive.

I like the highland and speyside scotches too. I think I have just burned out my palette with strong flavors, and all that gets through to me with any "message" anymore are the "poison" ones!

Does Thom like the Glenmorangies that are finished in different casks - port, sherry and madiera wood barrels, I believe? I enjoy those for after dinner drinks - and sometimes they go on sale at BevMo.

All this is putting me in the mood to go and rummage through my liquor shelf!

Just yesterday I was offered a nip of Old Potrero on the ski slopes from a San Franciscan who had a little flask of it. Wow it was smooth! (And, frankly, it was the only single malt I've tasted that didn't taste like an oak lollipop. I'm really more of a sissy-drink person.)

If you love Glenmorangie I think you'll love Glenkinchie. A smooth lowland single malt... hummmmm.

I don't know if enjoying scotch is as bad as enjoying wool apparel.... Both are equally expensive!!

Mmmm Scotch... I *love* Scotch... Unfortunately, since I'm not really drinking these days, I haven't had any in years. :/ I keep on meaning to buy some and just have a little from time to time, but I just keep procrastinating. :/

So do I, bikerz! Mmmm. . . smoky, peaty goodness! I <3 scotch! (and, on a very different note, the French liqueur, Chartreuse!).
