    The Alaska trip/photo

    To disable ads, please log-in.

I posted my Christmas card picture for 2006, me and the DH in a kayak in Alaska. Several people have asked about the picture and the trip, so I thought I would pull it out of the Christams card thread.

The trip was amazing. I won it as a sweepstakes in Backpacker magazine. The prize paid for about half the trip, and gave us the coupon for the outfitter. I really wanted to do a multisport trip that mixed backpacking and kayaking and rafting, but we could not make it work, so we "settled" on a week long kayak trip through Prince William sound.

It turned out to be the trip of a lifetime. We had an amazing group. All guys and me...what else is new. They were all terrific. The guides we amazing. We camped and paddled for 6 days. Because we had a very strong group, we did some really big mileage days 20 plus miles. On day three of the trip, we were at the end of the planned intinerary, so we did extra.

We saw, orcas, and humpbacks, sea loins and sea otters, baby seal, harbor seals, bear, puffin, eagles, kitwiks(sp). And the glaciers...oh they were incredible.

We only had one day of rain. It was just perfect. I will post a few more of my pics.

Oh my gosh, this looks like so much fun. This is in reality one of my two dream vacations when I retire (the other is to swim with the manatees). Only 9 years and 90 days to go!

Stunning photos! You could win a contest with those. I don't like cold weather one bit, but your beautiful photos make me want to go to Alaska (but maybe not in the winter....)

    Thanks for sharing,

I went to Alaska before digital cameras. I got lots of nice photos but some have faded. I need to go back now that I have a digital.

Alaska is an amazing place. So beautiful it's almost scary. Also so remote and desolate in places. A friend and I did a hike out of Denali and never saw one person the whole day. We did see Moose, Brownies, fox, wolf, and all sorts of cool critters. The wildflowers against the snowy mountains were also so beautiful. So much more I want to see and do.

    Cool pictures!

I got rushed by a male grizzly in Denali. More excitement than I needed. I'll stick with more travelled routes these days... (yes, I'm a wimp, and not ashamed to admit it!)
