I think it's a blend of 10% wool, 90% synthetic (polyester, coolmax, fleece).

I feel your pain. Obviously the army doesn't care about how soft their wool items are. They probably use steel wool in their pants, for tough guys with iron kneecaps. Good thing they don't make bras!

Steel wool - you're probably right. Would protect soldiers from electrical fields as well.
Oil is good, grease is better.
