Eggbeaters on Road Bike?

I'm new to the forum and relatively new to cycling (road one season). I'm getting clipless pedals and shoes for Christmas and am so confused.

I really like the Speedplay x5's because of the large float and two-sided entry. However, a friend of mine uses Crank Bros. Egg Beaters (mtb pedals) on her road bike and loves them. I'm tempted. Anyone use mtb pedals on their road bike? Do I need mtb shoes or road shoes then? OY!

Any shoe which accepts an SPD-like cleat with work with an Eggbeater. One thing you should think about though is foot support. Since some Crank Bros pedals (or any small pedal) don't have a platform, you need a shoe with a very stiff sole so your foot doesn't collapse over the pedal.

I use Look pedals on the road and Eggbeaters on the trail. I love both for different reasons. Crank Bros makes pedals specifically for road bikes and some have a platform. Check out their website. As long as you have good support via the pedal or your shoe (or best via both) you should be in good shape. Having a recessed cleat can be a good thing. And Eggbeaters have 4-sided entry.

Huh, I didn't know Eggbeaters were considered "mountain" pedals. Learn something new every day!

I have Eggbeaters on my road bikes, and my husband has Candys (which are Eggbeaters with platforms) on his road bikes, and we like them a lot. We both use shoes with recessed cleats (aka mountain shoes) but that's a personal preference - I know people who use road shoes w. eggbeater peadals.

aka_kim also has eggbeaters on her road bike, and (iirc) she has road shoes.

If you hit "search" button in the upper right corner and type eggbeaters into the search box, you'll find a lot of posts by myself and others about them. I think they're great.

I've always used mountain shoes and pedals with my road bike. I really like the idea of recessed cleats, plus I'm a klutz and need something easy to walk in. As jobob said, I use EggBeaters, and love them. I've gone through several pedal systems over the years, and think EggBeaters are the best.

Just my two cents again, I ride with Mountain bike shoes on my road bike and use the Crank Brothers candies because I like having some platform. I had to use the longer screws and the shims that come with the cleats but they work great and the directions tell you how to set them up. They also have a new pedal out called the Quattro for road bikes.

The Quattro looks very sleek & stylish! I haven't seen them in person yet, though.

The thing I really like about the eggbeaters is the ease of clipping in, and especially, the ease of clipping out - the latter being very important while you're getting used to clipless pedals !

As I recounted in excruciating detail in this thread http://forums.teamestrogen.com/showt...=&threadid=947 I originally had a bit of a problem clipping into one Candy pedal (clipping out was fine, though), and it seemed to be the way that the Candy platform came into contact with the sole of that one shoe. I pretty much had the problem solved (shaved away a tiny bit of the sole of that shoe where it came into contact w. the platform), but then the problem went away when I switched to the eggbeaters, since there was no platform to interfere.

For me, clipping in and out of the eggbeaters is simple and pretty much mindless, which is the way I like it !

Don't you love having to do this customizing effort on soles? You'd think the shoemakers would figure this out. I think I've used a Dremel tool on every mtb shoe I've ever owned -- even for Eggbeater cleats. I would think the shoe companies would test a few standard cleats - say an Shimano cleat/combo to make sure it works. For 200+ bucks, can't they do the testing?

ehhh Sadie - we'd just customize them again Anyway!........guess its just coz we can't leave well enough alone! I ride on Shimano SBDs with the Specialized MTB shoe on a Trek Navigator 200. I love the MTB shoe because of the recessed cleat - I have to walk the bike into and out of my house or my office building so I needed a shoe I could walk on. The SBDs (am I saying that right? LOL) were a little tough to clip in N out of in the beginning until the cleats wore down some but I don't even think about it now! (gosh, never thought I hear myself saying That!)

Now, I do have to say I'd be willing to do whatever customizing necessary if I had rose pink Sidis.

I use Speedplay X/2s with Lake or Sidi road shoes on my go-fast bike, but when I had my Bike Friday (road bike) built for touring and casual in-town rides, I decided to try Eggbeater Candy SLs. Love 'em! I got mountain shoes and also had to shave down the soles and use the shims to clip in, but now that they're dialed in, I am very happy. It's very nice to have recessed cleats in touring or going shopping on my bike situations.
