To Fall or Not to Fall....that is the Question.

I thought I was doing great when I first went clipless I didn't fall for the first few months after I got them put on. Then all of a sudden I fell twice with in the same week. Although one was because of a dog took me and my bike out so I really don't think the third time counted. I was unclipped but still fell over.

We had a poll on this topic in August. There were 16 people who reported no tipover falls with clipless pedals, 29 who reported tipovers while learning, and 16 who reported occassional tipovers. So 26% of us converted to clipless padals with no tipover accidents.

I've been riding seriously for 35 years, tipped over once ~32 years ago with cleats and toe clips, and never again. Been using Speedplay pedals for 5 years and love them. Used Looks for awhile before that. I've had plenty of close calls and panic stops where my foot barely came out in time, but somehow it always popped out. Either luck or a panic pull that brakes it loose.

I've only fallen once, and it was because of a badly worn look-clone cleat. *crosses fingers and knocks on wood* No problems since I put SPD's on all my bikes. now dh...that's another story...but his pedals are wicked

PS - I didn't count the time hubby had to catch me and bike because we didn't realize his pedals (shimano spd) were not compatible with my spd-clone cleats (which work find in my M520 shimano pedals...)

I wonder how many of the 26% are road vs mountain bikers? I can't imagine not falling at some point on a mountain bike. On my road bike I only fell once - but what a fall! It was 13 months after I went clipless....fell the same day I went clipless on the mountain bike.

We need a recount - how many people have NOT fallen due to a clipless pedal incident (spd'd) on a mountain bike? And, if you have not ever fallen due to this on a mountain bike, how long have you ridden and do you ride the bike offroad?

we're not including falls not related to your SPD's... so if you fell because the log you jumped was too big, it doesn't count.
