This cold season (we're already into sub-40 degree weather, oy!), I've been running with one of/combinations of the following, for outer layers on top:
REI light soft shell jacket (has nice stiff tall collar)
Marmot Driclime shirt (jacket with high but not stiff collar)
    REI thin/medium weight fleece vest
Patagonia Wool 4 V-Neck (my big purchase, this fall)

The soft shell often seems to get too heavy, about 10 mins into my run. The high neck is nice, when there is a tailwind, however.
The Driclime -which is a men's model and is a little large on me- does flap a bit in wind but it shields me from the wind while not letting my sweat weight it down.
The fleece vest, while nice and toasty during my 5-min warmup walk, ends up being too much for the run, when under a jacket. As long as it's not windy, the vest is a good "outer" layer on top of the wool shirt.

I love that Driclime, for running. It's pretty good for cycling, mountaineering, and river rafting, as well. Good luck!

I've gone running in my Etxe Ondo jacket and it's great.

Agree with the black comments, tho. I wear reflective arm bands with it since I go out running before dawn.

OK, this is a cycling piece, but I have the jacket and it doesn't swoosh. I'm contemplating buying this vest. The front is wind block and the back is a pretty thin lycra; perfect for layering. I think it would be fantastic for running on chilly breezy days.

This also looks nice for running. I love the Sporthill stuff for skiing; I suspect it would be nice for running as well. Rated for 0-40 F.

I like vests. Jackets are OK for the coldest of days, but I'm with RedCanny. I get too close to imploding if I wear a jacket unless it's in 20s. That "new" lighweight wool (long sleeve) and a vest...perfect.

I have a Marmot driclime windshirt and it's really flappy. OK for backcountry skiing but not running. Though the flappiness may be a function of having a size too big.

    Yellow,
I have been looking at the Sporthill 0-40F vests. I layer with Under Armour, and need a vest for those chilly days.

BMo3: I just got this in the mail today (in the blue color).

I love it. It's heavier than I thought it would be but will be good for when it gets in the 20s but not so heavy that I'll sweat too much. It has vents on the front of the shoulders and in the back. And the sleeves zip off. And...it has reflective piping for those winter evening runs. I suspect it'll also get used quite a bit for XC skiing.

Have you found your perfect jacket/vest yet?

I just got a $10 coupon from TE for jackets by email just a few minutes ago. I'm assuming I'm not the only chosen one!

May I inquire as to which one it is? I am thinking of a vest for my top layer, for the coldest of days.

One of my favorite cold weather layers is actually an underlayer. It's essentially a sleeveless long underwear top - the REI Midweight MTS Tank Top. Here's the link.

    I FINALLY bought a Vest

I will let everyone know how it works and of course fits. Sizing is always a gamble for me when it comes to tops.

Anyway, we are in a heat wave right now, but I found this on sale, last year's model.

    Opinions anyone?

I bet you'll love it. I've never been disappointed with any Sporthill item (OK, well, maybe their winter training pant collects a little too much dog hair, but that's not really a manufacturing defect ).

    Yellow,
Your dog is beautiful. The boys would so very much love to have a dog, unfortunately our cat thinks differently.

Thank you. She's quite the love!

We had the cats fist, BD (before dog), and they took it all pretty well. Of course Pi doesn't really show much interest in the cats; she'd much rather hang out with the people (since people give out biscuits and cats do not). We recently acquired a second dog (another Lab), an adult that has apparently never been around cats. She can't figure out why the cats won't play with her, but she doesn't push it with them. All is harmonious. Now if they (the dogs) were some other breed that is biologically programmed to chase small fast animals, well...could be a different story.

Sure, I'm so sorry for my delay. Sadly I pulled it out of a sale bin, years ago, and I don't know if they still make anything like it. Only paid $16 for it! It's basically a thin but pretty dense polarfleece, just one layer of that, and fits pretty snugly. It's a bright gold color, so doubles as something that lets drivers see me.

Glad to hear you found a vest! It looks a lot like mine.
