Hm, that competition doesn't necessarily have anything to do with competing against others. Many if not most simply signed up as a way to publicly state their goals -- just like this thread. Besides, beyond the availability of hills in everyone's home terrain there is the issue of the creativity in measuring altitude gain. If I used just the Internet mapping sites, I could easily increase my numbers by 30-50%. Nope, it's only for personal measurement, just like total mileage on BJ.
