    Wow,

    Can you believe it's been a year since I stroked??? In the spring I had a million goals, and great heartache when I could not reach them. Then I FINALLY realized that I was being to damn hard on myself and had to look back at how MUCH I have achieved since my illness. Like all of you on this board I am one tough cookie, and I have fought a damn good fight. One year ago I could not walk, tie my shoes, or dress myself. Now thanks to PT/OT and my family I am doing all that stuff with a little help from my braces and canes. I can ride my bike, not alone, with hubby and son, but damn I CAN DO
    THAT!!! So, illness has made me realize that goals are silly for me, and I need to take each little accomplishment like it was a "goal".

    Watch out for me...I'm coming back with a vengence

    Hm, that competition doesn't necessarily have anything to do with competing against others. Many if not most simply signed up as a way to publicly state their goals -- just like this thread. Besides, beyond the availability of hills in everyone's home terrain there is the issue of the creativity in measuring altitude gain. If I used just the Internet mapping sites, I could easily increase my numbers by 30-50%. Nope, it's only for personal measurement, just like total mileage on BJ.

    After reading through this thread, I am so impressed with all of you (not that I wasn't before). For instance, I can't imagine climbing 300,00 feet for the year (especially for as flat as it is here) or riding 7500 miles. Bravo to all of you, especially those of you who were coping with an injury or illness. And here I've been whining all week about a darn cold!

    Thanks for the inspiration.

    Wow. I am impressed. We await your comeback - and I am really appreciate that you shared your perspective on your recovery and goals. Puts things into perspective and is a good reminder to some who need it (ahem) that sometimes we need to listen to our bodies instead of our goals.

    My Goals

    My goals for the year included the following . . .
    Lose Weight
    Ride my first century
    Commute to work everyday
    Double last years 1200 miles.

    So far I have accomplished . . .
    Lost weight, about 30 pounds.
    Rode my first century, LRRH in June.
    Ride my bike more than I drive the car.
    Just passed 3300 miles for the year.

    My goals to finish out the year . . .
    Lose 20 more pounds
    Make it to 4000 miles
    Stay in the top 1000 riders at Bike Journal

    I think I'll make my milage goal of just over 3000 miles this year. It will be a stretch, though.

    Sadly, my more interesting goals will have to wait until next year. I was going to finish my bike tour and ride from more-or-less Sioux City IA to home this spring but Younger Daughter's graduation got in the way of that.

    DH & I were also going to ride the Katy Trail across Missouri, but getting Younger Daughter to college delayed that plan at least a year.

    (As for all of the above: As my Dad would say it's cheaper than bail. Frankly, I'm not too sure... )

    Ah well, there's always next year, and I don't think the trails are going anywhere. I've even heard rumors that the Katy Trail might be extended. I like rumors like that.

    Climbing goals: I just have resolved to point my big ol' bike at more hills. I refuse to keep track, though, just knowing the raw miles is enough.

    Having to write out your goals is such great motivation!

    I started riding in April, on a mountain bike, with a goal to ride 500 km this year. Broke that in May. Upped it to 1500 km, bought a road bike, and broke my goal in July. Upped it to 2500 km, broke that a week ago. With teh weather changing and being back to work, I don't think I can realistically ride as much as I have been so if I can break 3000 km by the end of December, I'll be very happy.

    Also had a goal to lose 20-25 lbs and have lost 12 so far. Will try to lose the rest by December 31st.

    My other unrelated-to-biking goal is the be able to look good in a bikini once more before I die. Preferably next summer. Will have to do some serious working out this winter to accomplish that one, if it's even possible...

    As an aside, after reading everyone's goals, I am inspired, but none so much as people like Massbikebabe, Bikingmom, and Maillotpois, whose health struggles make my own goals seem frivolous. Congratulations to all of you who have so much more to deal with. I am truly impressed by your strength and determination...

    My goal was to ride the PMC. I didn't have any other goals around mileage or anything else. But to do so, I had to get into decent shape, learn how to ride, use clipless, ride on the road instead of bike trails etc. So this whole cycling season was one of firsts, and I consider it a great success. At first everything was a challenge, even the entirely flat local rail trail. By the end of the summer, I enjoyed long distance riding in groups and was in decent shape (which is only getting better).

    For the remainder of this year, my goals are:
    -finish the duathlon I'm entered in
    -continue running and spinning/biking to build my fitness
    -come up with my event list/goals for 2007 and rough training plan
    -enjoy other sports (kayaking, snowshoeing, skiing etc)
    -do more strength training

    I've revised my mileage goal upward from 5K to 8,250. If weather permits, I might raise it to 9,000. I'm hoping for a mild, snow/ice free rest-of-2006 (and all of 2007, haha).

    My goals for the rest of the year is to get out on my 'cross bike for some dirt riding and to acclimate quickly to the colder temps.

    goal to have a goal

    I've only returned to cycling (since my 20s) this march, so I'm too much of a newbie to have formulated any goals beyond hoping that I would continue to cycle consistently in spite of the fact that I was gaining weight pretty steadily (and DH who was riding less and eating more was losing steadily ). Well, I kept at it, and I think I will hit 1000 miles within the month. I've also lost the 8 pounds I gained when I started plus 15 more. I don't think I want to get too hung up on weight loss or mileage, because I can become obsessive about these things . I think I will just stick with the goal to ride consistently.

    this is a running goal:

    when i lived in phoenix i didn't believe i could run. there was a trail that hiked around usery mountain that was 7 miles long. it would take me from 3 to 4 hours to hike it depending on who i was with.

    when i go down there next month my goal is to run it the whole way.

    (now that i've said this twice and have this many witnesses i have to do it, hopefully the leg will be 100% by then.)
