J/K. Reading it, I was actually thinking "You know... I think today my favorite cyclist was the chick I passed on the way to work. She might've been on a hybrid, wearing baggy jeans and weight she'll eventually shed with this velo habit, but my god, she's out here biking." I don't generally root for the underdog, but you know, I think it's the people who bust their @ss every day..."

That sounds totally sappy, though... oh well.

My spouse, actually. He rides a 30 year old steel Raleigh International. He's totally unpretentious about cycling. He loves hill rides and invented a 54-mile Seattle Waterworks tour as a means of climbing to all the highest points (water towers) in a very hilly city. He did Tour de Blast on that Raleigh two years ago (80-some miles from a town off I-5 up to Johnston Ridge at Mt. St. Helens, and back--7000+ elevation gain), and MAY get a new bike someday but only after doing RAMROD (Ride Around Mt. Rainier in One Day) on the Raleigh first. He's small and wiry and thus climbs well, and is the least show-offy person in the world--just quietly does his thing. He's ever helpful and generous with his time and bike help. He loves riding the tandem with me when not doing hideous hill rides. He's cool.

Wow. how wonderful that you can write that about your spouse. To be able to share a passion like cycling is so lucky. I love my DH, but he won't ride more than 10 minutes with the kids.

A lady I met on the London - Brighton ride in 1982. It was outside a pub having a break and I looked at her bike and said "Wow what a great granny gear" (or similar) . She said "It's a negative gear. It has a 32 on the chainwheel and a 36 on the rear. My husband did it specially so I could ride up anything"
So equally to her and the DH. Is that *love* or what?
