Thread: recovery?

    recovery?

    How much recovery time should I give myself after this trip? I feel better now that my cold is less then it was. But I am still gooey.
    Also you know I thought I would loose some weight when I was on this ride, but didn't any explanations out there?

    It is doubtful that you could have lost any weight on a ride like that except for water weight, which is from dehydration, which you probably got right back.
    You sound like you all ate well.
    Hard exercise makes you hungry and you eat.. more ?
    Exercise tends to build muscle, which weighs more than fat. ...
    I'm sure you've heard all of this before.

    Ok that all makes sence. I didn't eat as much as i should have. My appetite was wierd being at high altitude like I was.

    I thought maybe my normal ride would seem easy compared to what I just did. My husband is on line looking at other rides for us to do. Guess he liked it! The one he is looking at is in oregon and is sagged and they cook everything and carry all your gear. That's luxury compared to the last trip!

    I was on a similar ride recently, 7 days, 4-5 hours a day or riding.

    I took one week completely off the bike right after it, so I could leave my bum to heal a little bit (I was not saddle sore but I was tired to sit on the saddle) but mostly to mentally rest. I ended up taking about 10 days off, and I went for the second-next club ride when I came home.

    Do take this time to shop for the next trip!!

    That is funny you say that, at one point I said never again. And then i got into the groove of it. But we were in the saddle sometimes for 10 hours in the rain going up hill (not bare footed ) and it was not fun. But this new one my husband is looking at is a supported one which is sweet. So if I want to hope in a car and drive the rest of the way I can. This ride we just took didn't have that option.

    Losing Weight

    I went on a 480 mile - 7 day (6 day riding) tour this year. My first of that length and duration and I thought I would lose weight also. When I got back, I had not lost anything (which really is a good thing since I ate and drank to maintain my weight), but what I did notice was that about a week or two later, I guess this ride kick started my metabolism cause I lost about 4 or 5 pounds and I was able to eat more and not gain weight?

    Weird huh!

    the long ride I went on was the Bicycle Tour of Colorado - lots of climbing on road bikes! Pagosa Springs to Creede, Creede to Gunnison, Gunnison to Montrose, Montrose to Telluride (a day off in Telluride), Telluride to Mancos, Mancos to Pagosa Springs

    Great scenery, beautiful country!

    My friend who has ms who went with us on our ride did that same ride with he's boy's. He own's the water wheele hotel in Gunnison too. He is not doing well right now after our last bike ride. We think he has over done it this year. Has not been able to walk for about 3 days now. I don't own a road bike. I have a hard tail and put road tires on it. Could you do the ride you did with a bike like mine?

    We took a drive through telluride this past week. It is getting cold up there. Such wonderful homes there too. I bet it is something to see in the winter?

    Could you do the colorado bike tour on a hard tail with road tires. Yes, a lot of people rode different types of bikes like that. I myself really like a road bike for riding the road, a mountain bike for offroad, etc. They are designed for the activity and road bikes are so fun once you get used to them!

    I would recommend a triple chain ring or a compact for a road bike tho. I have just a regular two chain ring bike and it is light, light light. I was able to do the ride on that bike, but there were times when I wished for more gears. The double is fine for 1-2 days, but for more than that it would have been nice to have lower gears.

    Remember that instant gains (as in weight loss) are usually because of you doing something radical... you dont want to lose weight on a few days tour because your body will read that as a problem and try to over compensate.

    however, to lose over time - as you have done... to have recovered, continued light training, as you say, your metabolism lifts and kicks up a gear and thats when the "gains" are made... weight loss should never be instant (and if it is, as Mimi said, it is most likely dehydration which is not good). weight loss that is steady and over time is usually long term .
