    Protein Powders

There are so many protein powders around. What's your favorite?

Years ago -- fifteen, maybe longer? -- we bought some sort of protein powder that was made by Shaklee. If I recall correctly, it was butterscotch flavored and the sales rep told us you could mix it with milk, water or anything, but his favorite was to mix it with orange juice. As odd as that sounds, it was really great. They don't seem to make it any more, though.

I haven't bought protein powder in a long time, but I'd like to try some again, but I don't know where to begin.

I use GNC's 100% whey protein powder in either chocolate or french vanilla.

    I use this one:

We like their chocolate and vanilla. I've been wanting to venture out and try other flavors but I don't want to buy a big tub and possibly end up not liking it.

I know! They should be like the Spirutein, and come in tiny 1x packs to try 'em, then you can make the commitment and buy 5lbs. =D

I like anything that has a lot of vitamins and minerals with it; I tend to forget my multivites in the morning, so putting a scoop or two on my cereal is a workable replacement.

No brands for you, though, but I'm really liking whey protein. I think it mixes better than soy, but it might be a matter of the brands, too.

    EXACTLY

The only trial size packs I've found around here are actual MRP's and I don't want that - just the protein, dangit!

I like Vitamin World's house brand of vanilla whey protein. I would like to try chocolate, but the vanilla is so versatile for smoothies with fruit and such, and I even put it on my cereal (along with milk), and I can't think of nearly as much to do with the chocolate so have not bought it.

well, right now we have a tub o chocolate from designer protein which is pretty good. don't know where my husband got it. we also have a tub of trader joe's vanilla whey not opened yet. eager to see how it is. finally I have some soy at work that i'm not so fond of. I agree the soy is not as good, at least this brand isn't . it is a lot more clumpy in texture and taste.

Let us know your vedict on Trader Joe's Vanilla Whey. I shop there all the time, but did not want to buy a tub of it to discover I did not like it. I have used Designer and liked it fine. GNC is about the same, slightly smoother (it was on sale, so I switched brands) I am getting very low, so I will be buying more soon.

    My vote.......Unipro Perfect Protein. It's also lactose-free

"Perfect Protein Highest Biological Value Whey Protein Advanced Cross Flow Micro-Filtration Process (CFM) Lactose Free and Fat-Free Unipro's Perfect Protein has the highest biological value of any known naturally occurring protein. It contains very high branched chain amino acid (BCAA) levels (25% of the protein is composed of BCAAs) and contains easy to absorb forms of amino acids (di- and tri -peptides) which support nitrogen retention."

I buy soy protein in bulk at the grocery store. It's nasty in some uses, fine in others - and it's VERY inexpensive compared to all those other tubs and flavors and such.

I just bought some Nutiva Organic Hemp Protein Powder. (made in Canada, of course!) The store had several brands (all Canadian) of hemp protein powder, but this was the only one that came in 1 oz envelopes so you can try it without spending the big bucks for a big jar. This envelope was a bit more than a dollar.

The only thing in it is hemp protein. No flavorings or anything else. Will try it in a breakfast smoothie. Sometimes milk and soy make my stomach grumpy, so it'd be nice to have another protein option.

I've given up on protein powders - I've tried all kinds of protein powder and my system just can't seem to handle them after awhile - so I've just really tweaked my diet and I get about 120 grams of protein a day without any supplements - of all the ones I've tried I think Designer Whey protein had the best flavor

We like Optimum Nutrition. The Natural vanilla tastes a bit like paper though. The Gold standard cookies and cream is pretty good. My husband uses the pro complex vanilla flavor, too many calories for me! Also, if you can find it, Scitec Nutrition has some yummy flavors. My fave is the chocolate coconut (www.scitec.com)
You can get just about any brand or flavor of protien powder (its alot cheaper than GNC) here : www.advantagesupplements.com

Pooks, what do you want a protein powder for? I ask because whey is quicker acting, so if you're looking for a post workout drink, that would be best. If you want something more slow acting, you want a protein drink with casein added. Some protein powders have both. I look for the most protein for the least calories.

MetRx has transfats and does not mix well, so I would avoid that. Designer is good.

    had to say something...

    Ok...

so why do you feel you need a protein powder supplement?

Most people eat TOO much protein. The rule of thumb is roughly - two servings of dairy foods, and two servings of "meaty" foods per day should give you what you need. even if you are strength training, you don't need all that extra protein. its just hard on the kidneys.

servings are 1 cup of milk, 1/2-3/4 cup of yogurt or cottage cheese (depending on the type), a deck of card sized chicken breast, fish fillet, or steak, 1 cup of beans, and about 100 grams of tofu (but again depends on fat content).

    my two cents
