I had a very similar experience... fellow passed me when I was lazing on the flat, "on your left!" and I went by him on the next hill...same (but laughing) utterance... I think I added, "I love this hill!~" and then I cut over to the bike path for my cool-down last mile and he came up beside me and asked, "just what kind of bike *is* that?" [and it was the 7500FX, which was novel then... not the Xtraand we had a nice conversation.
So, sometimes it's not poison - but he did have to slow down and wander down the path... a serious testosteritis case coudln't have done that...
Unless there's a reason to be mean - and even then - I just say 'hello', 'good morning', or something similar when I pass.
However I'm going out on a hills rep ride right now and I can tell you I won't say hello to every person I pass because that could take a while. Lots of cyclists around here...
DH and a girlfriend and me were cycling Monday and we went 40 miles with lots of hills. I was in the back. At one point a racer roadie guy in full garb splendor zoomed past us all, but he was very friendly and said "I knew I would find some others out on this fine day!" as he passed. Very nice guy.![]()

Way to go Snappy! It's a good thing not all guys are like that or the social side of riding would be a real drag!
This weekend my friend and I were riding slowly up a big long hill, and two racer guys all kitted out in matching outfits came zooming up behind us, standing up this hill and chatting like it was nothing! So my friend says, in her cheerful friendly way, "Hey, here come some REAL cyclists!" as they passed us, and they both laughed and looked around behind then and said "Oh no, real cyclists?!? Where???" We were all chuckling, and soon they were gone over the top of the hill. It was a fun little exchange.

Keep calm and carry on...
OMG - I simply LOVE it!
I would have given a pretty penny (or two) to get a glimpse of his expression. From the passing w/o so much as acknowledging your existence to you rocketing past him on the hill.
I passed a guy this past weekend on the big mountain climb locally and it was a big deal for me![]()
