    September 5 Rides

Vacations are over, school is in session, and the CARS ARE BACK! Everyone be careful out there for the next few weeks. That's one nice thing about summer - fewer cars because so many people are on vacation. I had a 1 mile backup at a 5 way stop sign this morning for the first time in months. Managed to ride most of it at 3 mph still clipped in. Then there was the odd driver who decided to stop to my right while I was waiting to make a left and made a left too???

Ugh, yes the wee ones are back in school. Thankfully, my morning ride is too early for them, but I catch the midget flood on the way home. I have the honor of passing three elementary schools each way. One of the crossing guards at the east end just loves to put her orange cone right in the middle of the bike lane. Uhm, lady, I can't go left or right because of traffic, park it in the middle again and I am going right over the top of it!

Other than that, the commute has been great!

My commute was good this morning. The sun was out, a beautiful morning - and to think that I almost decided I was too lazy to ride today! I would have missed that gorgeous September air!

I do think it's funny, though - I have only done the full commute distance three times, and my morning timing is surprisingly close:
    8/25/2006 - 1 hr, 9 min, 1 sec
    9/1/2006 - 1 hr, 3 min, 18 sec
    9/5/2006 - 1 hr, 3 min, 29 sec
Now, really... what are the chances of having just an 11 second difference, given variations in traffic, weather, and my mood!

RAIN. I got out early, hoping to beat the heavier rain. No such luck. I was drenched. Visibility was poor---fog, my glasses were rain speckled and I used my second-best light. Luckily, tomorrow should either be just drizzle or clear.

I rode to work thinking we had a long meeting after school (told my second job I wouldn't be in today because of this). However, at the last moment the meeting was cancelled and I was left with a decision to make - go home grab my uniform so I could report to my second job or take the bike out for a nice long spin - I went with the bike ride (shame on me). I rode 27.4 miles on my Giro this afternoon and boy did my legs feel tired after the 50 mile ride yesterday. However, I stuck it out and toward the of the ride I felt stronger. I hope to get a ride in tomorrow after school - most likely my last long one before the Old Kentucky Home Tour begins on Saturday. Keep your fingers crossed for a rain free weekend, I'm sure the 900+ participants are hoping for sunny skies both days.
