    Do you guys have longer breaks during the year or do you just get out early in May?

    I formerly had a year round schedule. I loved that! I was off in Oct., Feb. and June. Now we're on a traditional schedule. Students start after Labor Day and we go until June 14. We have two weeks off at Christmas and a week at Easter. I don't like it as much. We like to travel. Thom does get five weeks of vacation, but it's hard to take them all at once.

    I'd like to go to Australia and New Zealand, but the timing just isn't right. Oh well...

    The pain for me will be all the annoying school buses everywhere. I envy your schedules. YEars ago i tried to get into the school system, as a secretary;
    something! so i could have the coveted schedule. it was not to be.
    Have a good school year you guys.

    As a mom, I cannot wait for my darlings to go back to school.

    I do feel for the teachers. Have a woonderful and quick school year. DH is not overly thrilled to be teaching a grad class this fall quarter.

    You couldn't pay me enough to be a school secretary. I can't believe how poorly some parents treat our secretaries. They are just rude, nasty and mean - especially on the phone. What's up with that?

    We now start the first week in August so that we can get two weeks extra of instructional time in prior to the state and federal tests in April - good thing we don't teach the test.

    We will get a week off in October for fall break, two weeks in December for winter break and a week in March or April for spring break. Our school year will end this year on May 25 if we don't have any snow days. If the schools close due to weather those days get tacked on to the end of the year. Last year we had 2 days to make up and we have had as many as 10 days added on to the end of year due to snow.

    I'm with you ladies. We started school last Thursday. Boo hoo.... I hate being a regular working shlub... Good thing I like my job so much and I don't mind going back to see the kids.
    This was the first summer in 9 years that I took off and didn't work (begged DH and made some cut-backs so I could have a summer off after a tough year).

    Hope you ladies have a wonderful and productive school year!!!
    Just think- Christmas break is right around the corner, and summer will be here before you know it (and in only 25 short years- I'll get to retire- sigh ).

    Me, too, gang! We start classes next Monday, but have meetings this week, plus the inevitable preparation of syllabi and first-day materials. I'm only teaching two sections of critical writing this semester, but I'm also directing the freshman composition program and the women's studies program. Yikes!

    I LOVE my job, but something tells me it's going to be a busy year. At least my classes are both late afternoon/evening, so I'll still have most mornings free for cycling. And Tri Girl hit the nail on the head--Christmas break is only 16 weeks away!

    Enjoy retirement Kathi and the planned bike tours. Keep us posted on how they are

    Only 8 more years for me but reality is probably more like 10 unless I can find a younger man w/ a great income and good health insurance

    Luckily I still like my job way more days than not and actually get more done during the school year than I do in the summer
