    I still remember getting bonked damn hard on the head when I was little--not by acorns but by horsechestnuts in the shell. Like getting your scalp whacked by a needled meat tenderizer tool. But as you say, the wildlife will be thrilled. Do you actually see them more during a mast year because they're out there scarfing the acorns?

    You see wildlife less during a mast year because they have plenty of food to eat in the forest and aren't scrounging around near homes/farm fields/bird feeders.
    Oil is good, grease is better.
