I usually do two night call shifts a week, from 10 PM to 10 AM. Yesterday I slept 7 hr, got up, worked 8 hr, came home, slept 2 hr, got up, worked 13 hr, came home, slept 2.5 hr, and here I am. It's not good, but it's my profession. I'm a midwife, and babies are no respecters of sleep for anyone! Some times I'll get several hours of sleep on a night call--it's completely unpredictable.
Ideally, I get 7-8 hr. I would love to sleep longer than that, but my internal clock gets me up. I always get up at least one to go pee. If I can get that much sleep with only one pee break, I am so happy.
It's taking longer and longer to recover from the night shifts.
