    August 11th rides

The ride in was okay. We had quite the wind storm last night and it left a lot of debris on the roads. Despite having a wet spring, we have also had a rather active fire season and as a result, the mountains are wreathed in smoke this morning. I am not sure which one is still burning, as we have had several big ones, but the smoke has permeated the air system here where I work giving me a slight headache already. Thank goodness it is Friday!

A very nice commute this morning. I took my nice road bike for a change, and cut almost 10 minutes off of my recent commute times. Tomorrow I think I'm going to attempt a 65-mile ride...I think.

    TATER!!!

I was hoping you'd write that you hadn't ridden this morning! That wind storm last night not only made lots of debris, but like 15 fires in the area. Several of them are pretty big -- three or five in the Grandview area in Owyhee county, and one by Lucky Peak (1200 acres, they said this morning) and another one or two over by Mountain Home, it's no wonder you have a headache today girl!

    I raced a car...

and the car lost! Actually the engine had concked out and the driver was coasting downhill, so it probably doesn't count. Oh well. Found an el cheapo HRM at REI and still trying figure out the instruction manual and interface. Maybe there's a reason why it was cheap!

Naw, it will take a bit more to keep me off the bike!

    I had to laugh

My ride was very nice. !0 miles of single track and no major mishaps... Until I was practicing my track stand in the parking lot. I'm still learning my track stand and have to unclip my shoes to practice. I forgot to unclip and fell in the parking lot while not moving.

    Ha!

I rode to school this morning with thoughts of getting a decent ride in after the kids left. Unfortunately, the rain moved in this afternoon and my long ride did not materialized. I simply rode home. Just 4 miles today but I'm looking forward to the century on Sunday.

Today was a great ride after having bad legs 3 days ago. 31 miles on the Western Maryland Rail Trail: My third ride this year over 30 miles (my goal by the end of the season is 45, which is out'n'back on the WMRT) and I hit a new average speed of 15mph. It was challenging, but felt surprisingly good. I'm lovin' the clipless pedals and whatever the bike tech did to my saddle during my fitting last month. And the weather was just beautiful, with a gorgeous sky!

Had an interesting encounter, too. While I was stopped for a break at the halfway point, a youngish guy comes riding down the C&O towpath on a long, low recumbent and stops nearby, so we started chatting. Turns out he's part of a group of 19 people riding all the way from Seattle to Wash, DC to raise money for bike advocacy. I expressed amazement at the distances he'd been doing each day and mentioned that my longest rides so far had been a measly 30 miles. The conversation then followed thusly:

Him: "You could go out and do 100 miles tomorrow. Really."

Me: "Yeah, maybe, if I were mentally prepared for it, maybe."

Him: "My longest rides used to be about 30 miles, and then one day I just went out and rode 100. You could do it."

It was great to hear something so encouraging from someone doing a ride like that!

    I rode with Bob Roll!

Today I had the opportunity to ride in a charity ride associated with the Tour of Utah. Bob Roll was the celebrity guest! It was really cool because all the Tour of Utah teams were coming out to warm up for today's race, so I rode with them, too!
The highlight was when my favorite rider, Jesse Anthony, of Team Kodak, came out onto the course right next to me. So I'm like, "Hi, Jesse." He gives me this do-I-know-you look. So I reminded him that I had been the one who had been bringing him and all the other riders their pre-race drinks the last couple of days. So we rode together a bit and chatted before he had me point out to him where he needed to sign in.
I have no idea as to how many miles I rode today because in my hurry to get to the course, my front wheel was put on backwards, so my computer didn't work.
If you can read this, take a pull.

Absolutely lovely ride outside, the roads were still wet, but I did get out. Then my trainer arrived, OUCH-talk about a serious workout. Love it. I will be logging many hours both inside and out. I love it!
