Someone we know (indirectly) just got her 2 bikes stolen in her car. She's a para-Olympian and those are her working tools. They were in her car, on the training site parking.
That got me to thinking do you take any precautions with your bikes - at least away from home?
As for us, our bikes were a huge expense to us and we try to protect our "investment" as much as possible. When they are in our SUV they are attached to a wood plank (to keep them straight). Binders are tied around them to keep them from moving. When we know we'll have to be out of the car, even if we see them, we put a bed sheet over them (at least it hides what it is - especially the models), sheet is same colour as our inside colour - so blends well. Our windows are tinted but we also lock them through the frame with a chain that is locked to an eyelet in the SUV trunk. I don't think a burglar would go through all this trouble to get to our bikes. Unless he is a professional and really wants our bikes. The harder our game, the less likely we'd get our bikes stolen.
We rarely leave our bikes without surveillance but if we do, it is only to go for a meal or if mandatory. Most of the time, one of us will stay in the car while the other runs an errand.
We can't prevent everything but we surely are trying. We did insure our bikes separately from our home insurance (basic home insurance only covers up to $3000 total for all bikes) for something like $144 per year for the 2 bikes. Better be safe than sorry.
So you do anything special?
