Usually I use this as a place to vent about my job, but today it's to proclaim my good fortune.
Today is my birthday and somehow, my students found out. They all felt compelled throughout the day to make cards. It's really hard to yell at a kid for drawing when they are making a birthday card for you. Most of the sentiments expressed were pretty generic (You're the best teacher ever!) but a few really touched me.
You have had us for almost two years, and you still want to teach us.
Thank you for not giving up on me.
You don't look a day over 30.
At the end of the day, I had the mom of a former student come into the room. He was in my class two years ago. She informed me that she was there at her son's insistence to wish me a Happy Birthday.
Yes, I know I matter to my students, but it was touching to have them express it.
