I do tend to think that 29ers seem like a really good compromise for many to the extent they roll over obstacles better--or at least it's alleged--than a HT 26er. I remind my husband of this every time he starts pining away for a FS bike. Of course, then he gives me the "Well, I'll just get a FS 29er." In reality, he just likes bike. The more the better.
Yeah, the 26er vs. 29er adds a different angle, for sure (I've only ridden a HT 26er, so I am looking foward to seeing how a HT 29er compares--especially considering it will actually FIT me, heh). If I lived in the UP I'd probably have a totally different experience, too...it's WAY rocky in places up there (I'd forgotten that, until I recently saw photos a friend took at a recent ultra marathon). Their terrain is quite different from what we have on the western side of the lower peninsula. Of course, as long as their Winter season is, I'd probably just get a fat bike and call it good.
