Bike49- Raising environmental awareness through biking

Yesterday I had the distinct pleasure of meeting this group of 5 cyclists from Humboldt State University as they made their way across the country. I read about them in Adventure Cycling Magazine: May 2010 issue.
They are on state 43 of 49 in their journey (almost done and back to California). They've ridden 12,500 miles, and are doing this tour to see the country, promote cycling as a viable transportation option, to promote sustainability of the planet, and show the importance of exercise and a healthy diet.

They spent the night with us, and came to my school in the morning to give a talk to the 1st-6th graders
They did a FABULOUS job with the kids, and their presentation was amazing (it lasted about 30 min. then a Q&A session).

Check out their route and see if they are coming through your area. If they are and you'd like to host them, or know of a school that might benefit from hearing about their journey- please send them an e-mail (bike49@gmail.com).
The states they have left to complete: TX, NM, CO, UT, AZ and finally CA- cycling back to Sacramento.

Hearing their stories and listening to them was awesome! They have done and seen so much! Last month we hosted a married couple pretty much doing the same tour but in the opposite direction. It was neat to see two different perspectives on the same journey (but one was at the beginning and this group was at the end). Fascinating young people- with a passion for the planet and making it a better place.

    Here they are:
    1. They cooked a huge dinner for DH and I
    2. On our way to school
    3. after their presentation
    4. heading out of OKC on Route 66- I rode them out of town about 15 miles and turned them loose. I really wanted to just join them and keep on riding...
