BMX pedals are HUGE platforms, with nearly solid contact and little screws/pins that stick up for grip.

Nice thing about them is that you can wear anything on your feet and not get hot spots. So, if you've got residual swelling or you are worried about constricting your ankles or feet and creating swelling with some particular shoes, you can wear any shoes that fit you or don't irritate you as you finish healing up (even if they have soft soles like Crocs or are wider than average). In fact, I find my BMX pedals grip better on softer soled shoes.

If the orthopod puts you into a soft brace after the aircast, it can be accommodated with any ol' shoe on a platform pedal.

I have BMX pedals on 3 of my bikes. (MKS, Kona, Crank Bro) My favorites are the Crank Brothers. I can wear anything, including sandals and Doc Martens. For just the trainer, I think you'd be fine with any platform pedal that was non-slip. Don't go buying an expensive pair of Crank Brother 5050 or Speedplay Drillium BMX pedals unless you'd use them again later!

(although.... just look at these sexy critters http://www.speedplay.com/index.cfm?f...=home.drillium and these are what I have, more pins! http://www.crankbrothers.com/5050_xx.php )
