I have a similar stretch on my route. I argued for a while that it was ok to take the sidewalk there, but eventually I was persuaded to stick to the road. Not for safety's sake, but because riding on the sidewalk sets a bad precedent and a bad example.

Bike lanes for that road are in the works, but I don't count on any promises.
