I had TSA take away a kryptonite lock cuz they thought I would use it to hit someone over the head and hijack the plane. And those hooks on my pannier bag really concerned them too......... Made the error of using my pannier bag as my carry on since I was retrieving a folding bike at the other end. Now I pack everything in my checked luggage.

If its regarding bike repairs, Lennard Zinn's books are quite good, as is the park tool blue book and website. But, you can't be afraid of it, just apply logic. Look at the parts, and figure out how they work and you'll know what to do.
