My first "real" bike was an orange Gitane, bought in 1971 (my first year of college). I had numerous other bikes, but this was my first real bike. I rode that bike for 26 years. I had rebuilt it myself, when I knew how to do that stuff. I then got my Trek 460 "mountain bike", silver grey with turquoise hightlights. I couldn't part with my gitane until I found a "good" home for it. Several years later I heard it was wrecked. I felt so sad. I then got a heavier duty Trek mountain bike. I had an equally difficult time letting go of my Torquey, but DH wanted one less bike around. I again found a very good home for it. Selling these bikes was out of the question for me. I had to find "good homes" for them. I know it is being handed down to children who love the idea of riding and do take care her. I wish I could get that bike back, though ....
