Slinkedog- I did the "metric" (NOT)- only 58 miles! I have a route sheet somewhere in my stuff and can tell you more. - Basic ride: We went out Canada Rd to Edgewood to Woodside and eventually up Arastradero to Page Mill to Altamont and then had lunch near Foothill College. Came back via Foothill Expressway, SandHill Rd, Edgewood to Canada and then back to the race track.

It turned out to be a nice day. I have ridden many of these roads when I was a kid so it was nice to be back in my old area.

The SF/LA AIDS ride goes down Crystal Springs to 92. That was familiar from last year!

Traffic coming back esp at 92 Junction was horrible. I'm glad I don't have to negotiate that one often.

VeloGirl- the roads were very well marked this time. Food seemed well stocked, but I didn't do the century so I don't know about the later times going through the rest stops and getting back to the start.

Great! Good to hear you had a good time and a positive experience!! Do you remember what streets you were on?

The 70k followed the metric for quite a ways - Crystal Springs to Canada to Woodside to Whiskey Hill to Sandhill to Portola to Alpine. The Metric split off to the right down Arastadero. I contined Alpine to Sandhill (at which point the metric rejoined my route) to Whiskey Hill and then back tracked to the Race Track.

Yeah it was a zoo around noon. One of the other riders commented that who would have thought you could get to the beach faster on a bike than in a car!

Sounds like some very nice routes! Those are all roads I want to ride someday soon!

Good to hear they've improved. I'd heard there was new management this year.

BTW, the routes are probably shorter because they used to start in San Mateo (at some high school near downtown).

The 92 junction isn't too bad on a bike, as long as you keep your eyes open for folks who drift into the bike lane. I actually like to ride by all the cars, smug in the knowledge that I can get somewhere faster than they can.

VeloGirl- You said it right! I think we could have beat all those cars down 92 to Half Moon Bay (love that downhill!).

Aha- I"ll bet that's the difference in mileage! One rider said her friend did an extra loop out on the metric so he could get in an official metric. I was pretty bummed as I had planned the ride to be part of my twice weekly metric routine!

Talked with a guy from my club who started out on the century route, but came in early as he had other plans for the day. He said Tunitas Creek wasn't as hard as Diablo (North Side) so maybe I'll do the century next year!

I'd love to do Page Mill to the top. I did that on a 10 speed steel bike in the 60's so it would be fun to see what it's like 40 years later and 40 years older! Also passed La Honda Rd which I'd love to do one of these days as well. It's just so far away and the traffic getting to the peninsula is a big pain!

My husband used to do Page Mill on his old Schwinn 5 speed (with rear baskets none the less) back when we were grad students at Stanford. One of our classmates was a die hard cyclist and he just couldn't believe it! He finally bought himself a road bike after we got out of school and that's still what he rides! (1981 Miyata...)

It was really fun revisiting some of my haunts. That was in the days when I just started really getting in biking... took a long hiatus when my kids were young and just getting back into again and remembering why I enjoyed it so much!

The riding over there is so much nicer than the East Bay... the roads are in so much better shape! I thought Canada Rd was wonderful, and I've always like the Portola Valley Loop!

Smiley- We really do have some nice roads in the East Bay. Come do the Bears with us sometime. Great roads,(except for Alhambra where there are two slides from this past season)and not a lot of traffic.

Also, Mines road is in good shape and no traffic up there either. You can find em, just requires looking a bit!

Yeah the bears are good - I live by there (near the summit of Happy Valley). We did Alhambra a few weeks ago and was amazed at the slides!

I want to do Mines and also try the Morgan Territory route - just waiting for a non-heat wave weekend!

We'll do another Mines Rd ride in the fall when it cools down! Yeah, lots of slides on Alhambra. McEwen is currently closed as well for paving purposes I believe. Have you done that one yet?
