Cycling Magazines just for Women...do they exist?

    To disable ads, please log-in.

Does anyone know of any good cycling magazines just for women? I was at the bookstore and found tons of magazines for men who cycle but none specific to women. I'm just curious if there are any magazines out that geared specifically toward women who love to cycle?

Most of the info I've gotten has been off of here or on the web in general.

No! At least I never saw one.... Unfortunatelly, women still have to read men's magazines for cycling. BUT, TE is the most helpful and the most informed women's forum I came across.

There was a similar discussion just a couple of weeks ago - this thread might have the info you're looking for: http://forums.teamestrogen.com/showt...cling+magazine.

Really? There are bicycling magazines specific to men? Which ones? I've only found magazines which are biased toward men, but not men's only.

Truthfully, every time I've picked up a women's sports magazine, I've been dead bored. It's either written for beginners or contains too much beauty product crap.

The bike mags just need to give equal time to the two genders, not divide and conquer separately. I have to believe it would be a financial fiasco. They are trying and have improved dramatically, which isn't to say there still isn't a long way to go.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but tuning a derailleur or picking a chain lube is not gender specific.

You're absolutely right, of course, and I agree with you. I should have mentioned that at the same time I referenced the other thread (which still may have some useful information in it for rivergrl...

SK you are 100% right about that. I agree with you that lately women's fitness magazines are full of ads and empty information. I used to subsrcribe to Fitness but stopped because of that. However, when someone is looking for women's cycling mag - she wants to find something that contains information and product review solely for women. I agree number of magazines try to incorporate women in their articles, but how many are there really? - I personally rarely see any even in Bicycling. Really TE is the only women's forum where you can find an answer almost to every question

There is a magazine out of Florida I believe called "Her Sports" -I think... The lady that won martha stewarts apprentice was the founder. If I remember correctly it was an independent magazine, and it was GOOD! I haven't seen it in a few months, so I hope it still exists, but it had alot of really helpful info. And also if I remember correctly there were very few- if any- ads. They of course had all kinds of sports, but it wasn't just a "lose 30 pounds in 30 days" type zine.. It was geared towards REAL athletic women.

There is a new magazine called Women's Adventure that use to be Dandelion Magazine. There is not a lot of ads and they usually cover bicycling and lots of other sports. I also like Adventure Cycling's magazine.

I've only ever read one good women's sports rag, and it wasn't based around cycling.

It didn't have those annoying ads, and had some really good (and some really humorous) articles in it, but it was rather short and spendy.

But anyway, I only tend to buy sport magazines when I'm shopping in REI and I see one that interests me (usually the gear guide editions) so I guess I'm not a big connoisseur.

I agree that Her Sports is pretty good, and not so fluffly compared to the usual "women's" stuff (or "pretending to be for both genders").

The problem with the "pretending to be for both genders" magazines is how they only think of men as their readers, as if women weren't there.

I don't know, the only time I ever bought a Bicycling mag was one of the gear guide ones and they had a nice sized section on women's specific gear.

Oh, and doesn't Triathlete magazine have women on the cover all the time? Or is that just a 'look at the sexy woman rawr' ploy to get the boys to buy it?

Oh well, I dunno. I guess I get most of my info from online anyway, and that's where you girls come in handy.

I find it so discouraging in this day and age to find a cyling forum that has a category for "Podium Girls." I haven't hung out at this forum much but just replied to a post at someone else's request so I surfed around a bit. Do I find "Podium Boys"???? Oh, noooooo. Might offend some guys ego. And, these are probably the same guys who wonder why their girlfriends and wives won't ride with them.

    May I say, "Not impressed."

I have bought Her Sports, when I can find it at EMS. But, reading it makes me feel like I am NOT an athlete. I don't want to hear about another 67 year old woman who runs 10 marathons a year, cycles 5,000 miles, teaches 20 Pilates classes a week, and scales 10,00 ft. peaks for a hobby. While, I might admire someone who is like that, it will never be me. Plus, there's not much about cycling in there, either. The annoying ads in other mags are a downer, as are the sexist photos of women. But, I don't mind articles about losing weight or other types of exercise. I agree, a cycling mag just for women would probably not make it financially, so just make the ones we already have gender-equal. I do read Bicycling. I just ignore the stupid stuff, as does my husband.

As long a Jonathan Dorn (editor of Backpacker Magazine) doesn't take over Bicycling I'll be happy. I cancelled my subscription to that mag a few months after he took over. Most of the articles were filled will high school sexual inuendo. Like I'm gonna cozy up to some guy I meet in the back-country. I'm more likely to have the pepper spray ready. The articles never had that junk in them until he took over. So juvenile. At least Bicycling's articles aren't like that...at least not that I've seen or noticed. They're actually about cycling and cyclists.

I read Velo News, and I have to say they do a great job of covering women's racing. Does men's racing get MORE coverage? Yes, but I still feel it is the most balanced on many rags out there, and as already noted above, many of what is covered is genderless, and I do enjoy reading about the guy's pro-tour teams.
