    Rusty pedals

My mountain bike has been out on my balcony since late last summer. Today I brought it inside in advance of the Crippling Blizzard of 2016. While it was outside it was covered by the giant canvas tarp that also covers my patio table and chairs, so it is mostly okay. However the pedals are rusted. They're old SPDs, specifically this model (I think):

So the metal part in the middle is where the rust is.

Is this fixable -- could I sand/file/clean away the rust? Or should I just replace them?

I'm kind of annoyed that I didn't discover this last week when the LBS was running their annual January promotion, giving $10 coupons on every $50 purchase. If I do need to replace them, I'll have to wait a couple of months because I've been spending too much money lately and need to give my credit card a break for a while. Though I was hoping to ride the mountain bike a bit this winter...

    - Gray 2010 carbon WSD road bike, Rivet Independence saddle
    - Red hardtail 26" aluminum mountain bike, Bontrager Evoke WSD saddle
    - Royal blue 2018 aluminum gravel bike, Rivet Pearl saddle

    Gone but not forgotten:
    - Silver 2003 aluminum road bike
    - Two awesome worn out Juliana saddles

good mtb pedals usually only die from hitting big rocks and logs on trails so I wouldn’t worry too much about some rust. If they spin easily I’d clean with something like wd 40 etc and a brush and then lubricate. If you feel/hear/see something wrong with the spindle bearings as you spin then do some simple and zen helpful maintenance….

When I know I’ll be riding in bad wet weather for a few days I’ll use white lightning on my pedal springs, chain etc.
Btw…. A good storm, a warm place to sit and read and some tea ftw….well if I can come back to ca. within a couple of days that is.

hoping you go through the storm without any problems!!!!! I'd forget the diet and stock up on comfort food
