    Off-gassing new polyester jacket

This is the 2nd time I've had this experience:

A new polyester based (well, a lot of athletic wear is polyester-based...spandex and so is lycra. ie. Most jerseys are polyester based, it's just nouveau iterations compared to the 1970's ) outer jacket has this off-gas new smell. So I end up 'airing' it in the living rm. near door. Not in closet. The jacket was given to us..by our employer since it has the corporate logo.

That bugs me. lst time was a new fleecy jacket. I ended up washing it to get rid of smell.

FYI Lycra is nylon not polyester, although it gets blended with poly. Spandex and Lycra are the same thing.

Why not wash it to begin with? Lots of garments are treated with some pretty scary chemicals that don't even have to be listed on the labels. (That's how permanent press fabrics are made, just for one example.) They'll stay in the fabric for the life of the garment, but obviously the off-gassing is greatest when the garment is new, which is one of the reasons why many garments have a label that specifically says to wash before wearing.

I honestly don't look at every sentence on labels for new garments. Just the critical stuff --ie. Dry clean only or Handwash only, Not colourfast, etc. Hate to think what chemicals have been used to treat the whole range of today's garments/fabrics.

I wish I didn't even have to spray the stuff to preserve/rejuvenuate water resistance for some outdoor casual jackets.
