Film- Half the Road: The Passion, Pitfalls and Power of Women's Professional Cycling

I attended the debut showing of "Half the Road" tonight, introduced by the film maker, Kathryn Bertine, who is also a professional cyclist. It was followed by a panel discussion with many of the women featured in the film interviews- many of whom traveled to Tucson to participate.

The interviews with pro cyclists such as Evie Stevens, Kristin Armstrong and many others are inspiring, but also eye-opening as to the inequity between the men's and women's professional cycling worlds.

This is a really eye-opening film. You can find information about it the website here .

How can you see it? The film is going to be presented at a number of film festivals, but if you have an independent movie theater in your community, you can make arrangements for a screening.

Funny coincidence. I was at a birthday party for a friend last Friday and we were sat across the table from a couple we didn't know. They introduced themselves and we got onto the topic of what do you do for a living, he was a film maker and once he heard that Tom and I do a lot of cycling, he chatted about one of his recent projects, a documentary on Pro Women's Cycling. Then I see this thread and go take a look at the film info and there he is!! It was kinda of funny.

One of the big messages we heard from Kathryn and the other pros was that we can have an influence on this. Consider finding opportunities for independent theaters to screen the movie. Also, if you click on articles about women's teams at sites like Velonew or visit women's team sites and click on the sponsors, those statistics are tracked.

At the end of the movie, there were a few updates- and one which she couldn't reveal, but which will be announced in the next 5 days.

There was a lot of discussion about the short run of the Tour de France Feminin in the movie... wouldn't it be cool if the announcement was the reinstatement of the women's Tour de France?

The announcement was on Velonews yesterday: Women will ride a circuit in Paris on the last day of the Tour de France this year!
