I could have gone my whole life without knowing......

that the feels like temperature the weatherman is always going on about is actually a temperature in the shade and that in real life, the actual temperature is 10-15 degrees higher. Guess that explains why the 40 mile ride yesterday in the relative cool of the morning (93) before noon, wiped me out so much.

where is the erase/wipe/delet button when you really need it?

We have two temperature sensors outside the house. One, at 1' above driveway level, north side, in the shade. The second, mounted against the house, still north facing, but up on the second level, above the deck, and must catch a lot of radiant heating. On a hot day, the second one typically reads at least 10 degrees higher than the first.

If you've ever put a remote temperature sensor in unprotected sun, but away from heat-trapping areas like porches and decks, you can watch the temperature fluctuate by 30°F or more as the sun goes behind and out from clouds.

This is why the cooling sleeves work even when they're waterlogged ... they're thin enough that they don't put a barrier between the evaporative cooling and your skin; the fabric allows sweat to evaporate at at least the same rate it does from bare skin ... and no matter how pale you are or how sweat-yellowed the sleeves, they're still a lighter color.

I was thinking about this on my ride today. We headed out for a "slow" ride, as it was 88 and the humidity is climbing. And, it was close to noon. I just wanted to get in 15 miles, as I am sorely behind on my mileage for the year. The slow went out the window when a guy riding a mountain bike on the road, latched on behind me, after we passed him. I told DH to kick it up. Finally, we pulled off, at an ice cream place (no, not to eat), to get him off of my rear, as I couldn't maintain a 20 mph pace in the heat, for more than 2-3 miles.
After dousing myself with water and drinking copious amounts, we continued on, and by that time, on the easier side of the loop. All of a sudden, we had picked up the pace again, so that when we got back to my neighborhood, before the hill climb, my average was just under 16 . Now, I know that's not much for some, but for me, on any day it is. When I got home, my face was so red, I thought I had forgotten to put sunblock on. I felt fine, but it took a cool shower and 1.5 hours to go away.
