You can estimate fabric yardage. If you hold your arm straight out while holding the fabric between your thumb and pointer finger, and then measure to your nose (other hand holding with thumb and pointer) that's about a yard. My mom taught me that, and it's a habit. If I want to see about what a yard would be, fabric, string, anything, I do that automatically and get the weirdest looks.

My left nipple is 9/16" wide. The right one is 1/2". There's nothing quite like body piercings to make you realize how asymmetrical you are!
