I've seen people riding Maxxis Furious Fred in dry conditions. They are super fast but easily punctured.
If you want a safer tire, Maxxis Larsen is ok. I used to ride the rear one Larsen and I was happy on dry terrain.

I want to resurrect my Klein mountain bike, which I had sorta turned into a utility bike, and start doing some moderate trail riding here in the Austin area.
The tires are the major change that I need to make. Any suggestions as to what tire does well in the Austin/Texas environment? (From the little that I've seen, the trails range from hard-packed clay to sand.)
Thanks for any suggestions.
