The trick is to stir them a lot to keep the oats from sticking to your pan overly much. I add the oats to boiling water, let them boil for a couple of minutes until they start to thicken, then turn down to a simmer - stirring frequently - until they are to the consistency that I like. For 4 servings this is about 25-30 minutes, if I am making less it might not take that long. At some point in the cooking process I will add frozen blueberries or chopped walnuts, both, or other things. I also like to mix a little peanut butter in it afterwards with a smidgen of milk. Yummers!

This works for me, I think there are some here that use an overnight crock-pot method but I can't seem to find it.
thank you!!! I'm going to try them this week.

Let me know how you like them! It took me a few tries to figure out how I like them - both in consistency and what to add to them. They are wonderful before a long bike ride, or a very cold walk from the parking garage to the office on a bitter cold morning...

So I have a random question for you: how do steel cut oats differ in taste from, say, quaker oats? And how do you cook them? I was at the store the other day and stopped by the bulk bin section and saw steel cut oats (they look very strange). It said to cook them for 90 minutes. Egads, man- I don't have that kind of time.
    How do YOU cook them?
My DH cooks them either in a slow-cooker overnight or on the stove. I don't think it takes 90 minutes even on the stove. Try doing a search as there have been a couple threads all about oatmeal and cooking steel-cut oats here. Lots of good tips. Steel-cut are SO much better than regular rolled oats, with a great, chewy texture. I highly recommend them.

It's now officially gotten too hot for oatmeal here in NC -- upper 80s today! Cold cereal only for me from here on out!

    Thanks!
This week I've vowed to give up all processed food- nothing from a box/can/bag. I'll try the hot cereal (even tho it's a bit warm for it). Going to dry to make dried beans, too. Oh, what an adventure this week will be!

Sugar can be made from cane OR beets, right? And gelatin for marshmallows is generally animal based? I think I can almost jusify my ideal Purely Peep diet by saying it represents every block of the food pyramid. just... some, more than others.

The Easter Bunny girlfriend dropped off 3 medium sized gooey delicious home made cinnamon rolls this morning. I ate one before my 3 hour ride, and the other two for a late afternoon "snack". I also ate 2 pieces WW toast, 2 boiled eggs,2 slices of veggie bacon, a piece of leftover bean burrito,an apple, a water bottle with UCAN mix,7 low fat triscuits and a slice of low-fat cheese. I'm feeling kind of gross after the 2nd and 3rd cinnamon rolls. My recovery tights are squishing my cinnamon rolls. And we haven't had dinner yet! tokie

whole wheat bagel, light cream cheese, lox. an orange, coffee

lunch at the museum: shared a field green salad and appetizer sized pizza with DH. pizza had goat cheese, fennel, and something else. I also ate the rather large and good whole wheat roll they were passing out. Started feeling very sleepy.

piece of cheese after short but hard ride.

dinner at friends... 2 glasses of wine, huge salad, turkey breast stuffed with goat cheese and spinach, whole wheat cous cous, strawberries with a couple of spoonfuls of vanilla ice cream.

    No scale today or tomorrow.
