Finally, it's hot, though not the heat wave we normally get in SoCal. All the same, it was a 99f commute today so I thought I would try my 'gotta have ice cream' cool down substitute. Simply grabbed the new ice crusher and let it rip. Then I put some strawberry topping on it and mixed it in. Two tablespoons=80 calories. Not bad. Nice and cool. I guess I could mix in some jelly instead, or my concentrated berry supplement. No, it's not ice cream but it's not 500 calories either, and it was refreshing.
It's hard being a recovering junk food addict (who needs to lose 10lbs) with an ice cream passion in the summer...

Isn't that what the 100-calorie bars are for?![]()

What is "strawberry topping?"
Really, there is no substitute for ice cream. I limit my intake to about once a month. I had some yesterday. I can't buy it at the grocery store because I'll eat it all up. So when I want it, I go out and buy a cone, or a chocolate chip malt as was the case yesterday. Yum.
Oh I think there is a substitute ... well at least sth that comes near for me, being an Icecream addict myself:
I puree mango or raspberry in a blender and add plain yoghurt and put this mixture into the freezer and stir it every half an hour until you have an ice-cream-like texture (I guess if you have an ice cream machine that would be better).
You can also use frozen raspberries (or other berries) or freeze fruit-puree in those ice-cube-making-thingies (whatever you call them) and mix them into yoghurt or curd to get an iced shake.
^That's not ice cream.
Tulip, that's the same thing I do.

^^A Smoothie is great, but it's a smoothie, not ice cream.
And there's nothing wrong with a smoothie. I have them several times a week. Susan, yours sounds delicious. Tzvia, I'm leary of the "strawberry topping."
After our long rides...50+ miles (last week it was 80) we drop the bikes off and go get gelato. Chocolate hazelnut and sea salt caramel in a sugar cone make me forget how hot I was...
Well the first suggestion IS icecream, it's just not sweetened. As I cannot use sugar it's the closest I can get to icecream![]()
And gelato actually has lower calories than ice cream!
"Whereas the typical ice cream has a fat content ranging from fourteen to twenty-five percent, gelato averages between five to nine percent butterfat, a significant difference.

I recently had a strawberry sorbet gelato (sorbeto?) that was so fantastic I couldn't believe it didn't have any cream in it. Of course I know it's not ice cream, but still, I enjoyed it![]()

I've recently discovered that I LOVE Julie's Organic frozen yogurt. Normally I'm a pure ice cream fan, but this stuff is delicious and allows me to feel slightly less guilty. I also find that I can keep it in the house without the burning need to down it all in one sitting (which is a nice change).

Julie's is great..and it's got my name on it so it must be mine! Right?!I've only had their ice cream (delicious) but I would imagine their yogurt is very good, too (although I'm not a frozen yogurt fan).
Gelato is wonderful if you are lucky enough to have it in your area. Sorbetto, too. I spent some time in Sicily and had gelato every single day, sometimes twice! I have rather fuzzy memories of a scoop of lemon sorbetto topped with limoncello. I don't remember the rest.
I'm a convert to coconut milk ice cream (Purely Decadent brand). Way less sugar (sweetened with agave) and calories and so creamy good. And it's pricey enough that I feel compelled to make a pint last.
I usually avoid sugar altogether but sugar-free/low carb ice cream makes me sick (sugar alcohols are not my friend). I love that there's a low-guilt, natural option.
I'm lactose intolerant but I take the pills for ice cream. Yogurt is the worst, the lactaid pills don't do squat for it so the smoothie stuff and frozen yogurt is out. The stuff I tried on the ice is the stuff you normally put on ice cream (strawberry, caramel...). Tonight I used the concentrated acai/berry mix and grape juice and that was good and healthier than the topping.
I really want ice cream, but I tend to overdo it.Take two poptarts with icing, and toast till the icing starts to caramelize. Then put several heaps of ice cream (chocolate/peanut butter or pralines and cream), whipped cream, fudge, nuts, sprinkles, caramel...
That's how I got fat. I got off 40 lbs and those last 10 are stubborn but I want something cold and sweet.
