When I went from aluminum to carbon I didn't really notice a difference because I was just not a particularly strong or sophisticated rider. Now, I notice a huge difference from bike to bike in responsiveness and handling (not that I am particularly strong or sophisticated...just lots and lots of miles). Also, higher end bikes tend to have higher end components, which make as much of a difference.

You betcha. I went from an aluminium bike (which, at the time that I bought it, was much lighter than my previous bike) to carbon and it's like night and day.

When I ride the Synapse (the carbon bike) it's like riding on air. When I go up hills I feel like the only thing fighting my climb is my own body weight, not the bike's. Everything about it feels lighter, faster, better.

Also - and maybe people don't like admitting to this - when you need to lift the bike to put it in the back of a ute because you've bonked in the middle of nowhere and have had to get your other half to come get you.. it's MUCH easier to lift!!!
