    Chain ring cuts on calf

    To disable ads, please log-in.

On Sunday I almost fell and in the process I cut my right leg up pretty good with my chain ring. I have about 6 cuts on my calf.

So far I have been cleaning it with hydrogen peroxide and then putting a gauze pad over it with neosporin twice a day.

So my question is.....any of you have experience with this and have any tips or tricks I can use for healing faster or without scars? It's still oozing clear and so far I haven't just let it air out because I thought I heard once that if you keep it moist then that helps prevent scars. Is that true?

Any tips or tricks are very much welcomed.

just keep it clean and covered. Some of us would covet scars like that.
I've been impaled by bike chainrings but it healed up fine.

keeping it moist is supposed to have it not scar as badly - Last year, I did put a chain ring through my calf... I didn't bother about scarring... there's a tiny raised scar maybe an inch long..

Last winter my DH, in an amazing feat of acrobatics, fell off of his balance ball, flipped over, and gouged his calf on the chain ring of my bike on the trainer. He did exactly as you are, but he has a scar. I think he probably should have gone to the ER, as it was deep and oozing for days.

    Stop using peroxide!

It cleans MINOR cuts and scrapes!

Keep it clean and use neosporin

    Yes, STOP USING PEROXIDE!

It's been found to do more damage than good because it damages the healthy tissue surrounding the wound! (So don't even use it on minor cuts and scrapes.)

Neosporin is good, and I have been fairly impressed with the results I'm getting from Mederma on my road rash... but I don't know how much of that is in my head. (And I couldn't bring myself to only use the Mederma on half of the wound just for the sake of science...)

I clean scrapes with regular soap and water and then keep them covered with a bandage. Since I'm allergic to antibiotic ointment, my doctor recommended using Aquaphor instead to keep them from drying out.

lph, it was hysterically funny. I was laughing like crazy because it kind of happened in slow motion. That was, until I saw the blood streaming down his leg.
    Then I felt bad.

    Thanks everyone for your help.

I stopped using the peroxide last night and I think I've turned a corner. I think it's stopped oozing and now it's itching. Itching is always a sign of healing so I'm on the right track.

I'm using this stuff called Silver Sulfadiazine cream. It's a prescription cream that I got a few years ago for a fire cracker burn. It seems every summer I am dealing with some type of open wound on my leg. Three years ago it was the fire cracker that fell sideways and shot my leg while I was just sitting in the crowd watching. Then last year I decided to get the spider veins taken care of and had them injected. Well.....that ulcerated and I ended up having to have a large chunk of my leg cut out and bandaged up for about 2 months. So I have my fair share of leg scars and am really hoping and praying this heals nicely.

when I completely came off my bike, one of the wounds was a nasty fabric rash from my backpack strap rubbing on my t-shirt. It's just under the collarbone and essentially peeled the skin right off.

I scar very easily and didn't want one so visible, so I mollycoddled it like you wouldn't believe it.

Tea tree oil, neem oil, and pure shea butter smeared on top of it all. Then I put gauze over it to keep moist and did this twice a day. Happy to say it didn't scar.
