Would that make it any easier to shift to the big ring on the aurora?
I can do it but it's quite an exercise.

That's a pretty good price if anyone's looking to upgrade.

I took the Aurora out yesterday and rode up Putnam- the part you zoomed down last time to meet your Mercedes driving cardiologist boyfriend
Then I went back down and, well, you know me and my close relationship with my brakes
These are not good brakes. They are the POS Brand.
So I won't be riding that bike anymore until I get new brakes.
I wanted to, though. I am liking that bike.

are the brakes bad rubber or are they not adjusted properly?
Zen, unless ultegra comes in the new smaller size for DA, I wouldn't go for it. If the shims don't swing it (ha!) then get the short reach shifters. for say $100 more you can get something that fits well. just my personal opinion. don't go throwing money around just because it is on sale, which doesn't make it cheap BTdubs
Thanks TE! You pushed me half way over!

I can't even consider buying those right now. I was just being hypothetical.

Well, I couldn't be late for my date with my bf, I'd hate to make him work to stalk me around Frederick county.
I went some odd way yesterday - crossed 15, went up some dead end road with 2 snarling labs at the end with 3 owners running around chasing the dogs to try to get them to stop chasing me, then went up some road, turned, went by an albino peacock in an enclosure, eventually came out on Blacks Mill Rd and decided to follow it, ended up on Catoctin furnace road at 15, didn't feel like backtracking & saw 6 cyclists come off 15 & turn up Auburn, so figured that must go somewhere... took Auburn to Putnam and suffered up this horrible hill.
I didn't see you or the cardiologist on Putnam... I was sick of chip seal by then and turned down mountaindale to bethel.
Are they POS brakes because you actually managed to gain some speed going down Putnam?

Odd. I have pretty small hands - x-small or small in gloves & really short fingers, but I can manage on regular ultegra or 105 without shims.
I have shims. The problem is not brake reach, it's how far and how hard it is to throw the shifter into the big ring.
Do you mean Angleberger (cross 15) to Putnam?
i know that wall.
I only made it 3/4 of the way on my last attempt.

kapow!
I am pretty certain that Lickton cycles used to carry them. I ended up with 9 speed set up (with which I am thrilled- for less money I ended up with a wide range of gears). I bought the R600s from them. The price has gone up about $30 over the past year. I wonder if I should stock up?

Yeah, I ended up on Putnam there, but I crossed 15 up at catoctin furnace road & took auburn road down to putnam...
I was in my granny gear, and ended up standing up the last bit to get up it. It probably would have helped if I'd been pedaling approaching the hill, but I was kinda looking at my gps trying to figure out where i was and kinda looked up and did the oh, crud, not a nice hill.

Yeah, that's how it's turned out.
Those R-700's are half the price of my bike![]()

The R-700's are so worth it. For the first time since I began cycling, I can reach everything and squeeze, tap, click without any issues. I got mine last summer for about $305. In fact, my lbs got them for this price; I couldn't find them any cheaper. Those, combined with new bars did the trick.
I had tons of issues shifting my 105s (especially in the front) on my first road bike. Basically, I never had that bike in the big ring. And I would pray every time I needed the granny gear. Not a good way to feel for a new rider. The Ultegra on my Trek was a little "difficult" on the front, too. Eventually, my DH put DA on the front, after he found it for a cheap price. But, since I've had the Kuota, my Ultegra has been perfect.
