    Compartment Syndrome?

    To disable ads, please log-in.

I've been getting PT for the problem described in this thread
    http://forums.teamestrogen.com/showthread.php?t=26637
and I am getting better but very slowly.

Today instead of working with my usual PT I worked with an athletic trainer at the office. She had reviewed my chart and spoken at some length with the PT about my injury and treatment, and she did some really good deep tissue massage.

She said that, based on my history and what she felt in my calf, compartment syndrome was a strong possibility. I haven't had any tests done for this yet -- so this is not a diagnosis. But I wanted to see if anyone here has had any experience with compartment syndrome -- if so, have you been able to keep it under control? Did you opt for surgery? Etc. I hope she is wrong, from what I've read it is potentially fairly limiting for runners.

    thanks!

Diagnosed with compartment syndrome years ago while running track in high school. Competed in track and cross-country during college, but ice and special tape jobs for my feet and lower legs were my constant companions. Ran marathons without any problems for a number of years after that; I suspect the slightly slower pace of non-race mode contributed to the easing of symptoms. Did not opt for surgery, although it certainly seemed the lesser of two evils at times. No longer run, due to a pelvic injury, so thank goodness there's cycling!!

    PM me if you'd like.

Well I don't have compartment syndrome myself but my boyfriend does. He is a PT and he also used to run in college, did tons of running after that and still does. One thing I have noticed is that when it tends to flare up on him he hasn't been hydrating enough. This is very important to keep enough fluid between the muscle and the irritated membrane surrounding it. The membrane is where the pain comes from. This is just an FYI post because I know it helps him. He will also ice it and elevate it when it gets really bad if you don't already do that. Hope that helps.
