    Training Vs. Riding

    To disable ads, please log-in.

Being a super newbie I have been trying to read up on everything cycling related. Can anyone recommend a website or book related to training? I'm not really sure what I should be doing in regards to training. Since I got my bike I would say I have just been "riding". Thanks for the help!

My husband and I just did a century. I think I would call it "training" that we did all summer, but oddly enough we didn't have a particular mileage goal other than doing at least 20, 2 or 3 evenings a week and a longish one on the weekends, 40 or so. Sometimes we did a longish one on both weekend days. I think for us, getting in the saddle as often as possible was helpful. Also, seeking out hills on purpose.

Here's a link to one book that really helped give me a lot of good tips about riding and getting ready for a Century--I'm doing my first Century in late October!

I strongly recommend this book. I read it from cover to cover (except the mountain bike part), and I still go back and read parts over.

A bicycle does get you there and more.... And there is always the thin edge of danger to keep you alert and comfortably apprehensive. Dogs become dogs again and snap at your raincoat; potholes become personal. And getting there is all the fun. ~Bill Emerson, "On Bicycling," Saturday Evening Post, 29 July 1967
