First, I've learned that if you keep your drivetrain clean it is less likely to get on stuff! I'm finally decreasing the number of rookie marks on my calf.

Second, I dropped a chain on my ride yesterday and put it back with my fingers -- which I then wiped partly on my husband's mostly-white jersey I was wearing. Ooops! I got it home and used dish washing detergent and cold water, and scrubbed the fabric against itself until the grease loosened. It seems to have worked!

I keep a pair of latex gloves in my seat bag. That at least keeps it off your hands. You could put some wipes in your bag too. As for chainring tattoos, I use lava soap and it takes it off pretty well, hands as well. It has pumice in it. Any mechanics soap will work too.

okee dokee...I will try the dish washing detergent (I think my chain is as clean as it's going to get...I've been cleaning it just about every 5th ride or so...plus I cleaned the whole cassette before I did Reach the Beach last month). I bent over and brushed my cute little blue jacket against the chain (baby blue, of course) and voila!! Grease Monkey

Good luck, I hope it comes out!

For a while I thought that Tri-Flow was cleaning as well as lubing my chain. My husband would scold me for having a dirty drivetrain, so I'd take a big long blast of Tri-Flow to it! Well, all I was doing was putting so much excess lube that it was attracting MORE grime! Now I'm trying to use Simple Green and scrub down the chain and cassette weekly (about every 5th ride, like you) and use only a 2-second blast of lube. Got a rookie mark yesterday, due for a cleaning...

another great grease remover is a product called "Soilove"... green bottle and cheap! works like a charm...

now if it would take grease out from under my fingernails... UGH! I GOTTA start wearing gloves when I clean the chain!
There is a fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness".
