I don't usually complain about the weather, but yesterday's was really weird. Bursts of snow and high winds were predicted from mid to late afternoon into the night. So we made plans with friends to snow shoe at noon, since there was about 2 inches of fresh snow. At 11:20, it started raining, really pouring, so we cancelled those plans. As we sat in our Ibex, we decided that after lunch we would do our short fitness walk in the rain. So, after getting out the cycling rain gear and waterproof hiking shoes, out we went. It was about 36 out. As soon as we got to the road, there was a gust of wind up to about 30 mph and it thundered! Then as we walked, the rain turned to snow. First it was just sleety, and then it was thick snow flakes. My legs felt cold, even with my Ibex wool, wind proof pants. There were more claps of thunder and wind gusts. By the time we turned back, we headed up the steep part of the hill, the snow stopped and the wind calmed down. When we got back to the house the sun was out! In 45 minutes, we had seen 4 types of weather.
The rest of the afternoon continued with alternating sun, snow showers, wind, and thunder. It is now 8 degrees and windy out, of course, on the day I have to go to a meeting in Cambridge and walk 5 city blocks from the train.

Yesterday's weather was pretty strange!! We didn't really have rain here, just wet snow (with the occasional thunder in the early afternoon--I think thundersnow is sort of cool). I couldn't believe the wind last night--it seems to have calmed down some but it still sounds like it's blowing pretty hard this morning. I was hoping to run today but between the wind chill and the fact that the conditions on my running route are probably pretty slippery, I think I'll hit the skating rink (no, not the one that is the sidewalks here) instead.

Yesterday's high was -2F with windchill down to -40. Today we might reach 10F! I am so sick of snow! We now have big dump trucks moving all the snow from downtown since they're running out of places to put it. This upper midwest is NOT a fun place to live!

On a more positive note, I tried cross-country skiing the other day and it was pretty fun. So maybe I will have some cross training opportunities with that..

-6F (-21C) with (sob)3-6 more inches of snow(sob). But, hey, we're targeted for a high of 13F!!!!!! Woohoo! Positive double digits!!!! Hey, just trying the glass isn't completely empty perspective It ain't working, but I keep trying!

Do you think Spring has been taken hostage by Winter? Fall so quickly lost the battle to Winter this year, so perhaps Winter is strong enough to fight back Spring?

    Edited:
Or, to put it in perspective, what's a little cold and wet compared to drought-induced fires that come in the dead of winter... http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/11/us/11wildfires.html ...What will happen come August? Yep, enough trying to find moisture in the glass. I guess I can't complain (although I do and will)

Hey, Beane--how much did you get in the storm? I thought about y'all in the Madison area as I watched the last storm track right over y'all. I'm on the dreaded I-43 storm path that, for some reason, that storm did not follow.

    Red face Don't hate me...

I'm sitting here waiting for the 45 degrees to warm up to ~ 50 degrees to ride.

BUT! Our summers are 110 degrees plus. You can't ride past 8AM. Don't crash or you'll risk 2nd degree burns from the hot pavement.

Sympathies, Thorn... OUr highs today 19 and only a couple inches, though, so our glass *does* have a little more backwash in it And I did find the key to my bicycle so I could ride the oen with the studded tyres. Now to find the original - last Thursday I had both keys, and this a.m. I thought I had none.
Four degrees this a.m. but ski goggles rock and of course... it's nothing compared to alaska...

Oh man, I don't even know. My husband studies geophysical fluid dynamics (AKA the weather) so I hear so much about it that I just try to tune it out. But let's see, 13" or so in that big one (when UW did NOT cancel classes!!! i waited for the bus for 35 mins in a blizzard!!), then one or two one-inchers, then 4" a few days ago, and expecting another 4 tonight. This is total madness. If I never shovel snow again it will be too soon.

I am finally over my flu (which became a horrific sinus infection/possible strep throat) and got back on the trainer today-- yay!

Well, for those of you who have been getting dumped on with snow, at least it's just snow rather than the mess we've had here lately (snow followed by freezing rain and then pouring rain, making a slushy mess, followed by below-freezing temperatures resulting in ice everywhere). At least with lots of snow you can snowshoe etc.--this garbage makes it hard to do any outdoor exercise. I'm feeling like I could really use a good run but don't dare try with the slippery conditions--ugh! Guess it will be some more indoor stationary bike workouts...just not the same!!

Glad to hear you're back up, Beane. UW didn't cancel? UW-Milwaukee will shut down in snow although only at the last minute. During a 12"-incher several years ago, I was in grad school and had to give the class lecture. I lived 45 minutes from campus and they wouldn't cancel classes. Well, not until I was about 10 minutes away from campus. Argggghh...it took me 5 hours to get home that night.

As for freezing rain vs. snow....you know, I'll take the rain right about now. I don't have to shovel rain We've been having bad ice after the storms, too--there just isn't enough salt in the stockpiles and when the temps drop to 0 or below the salt stops working.

For safety the salt shortage is bad, but in some ways, it is good. For instance, they are no longer salting my residential street. It isn't needed there--plow and drive slow. And, it is making them look elsewhere. Areas in the central part of the state (where they are more progressive) are using beet juice on the roads. It is the waste product after they extract the sugar. As I understand it, the juice lowers the freezing point so it reduces the amount of salt sprayed on the street. And, it isn't as harsh on the environment.

But this is one (explicative) winter--is there any part of the country that is having a happy winter?!?!?!?

Not here. We had a very beautiful two days - 40 degrees and the snow began to melt - then BAM --- 3 more inches. It is a balmy 16 here.

Sorry to hear that your weather has been so cold and icky.
