Just ONE Bike...

I am-- so far--- so much more comfortable on JA bike than on the Globe...and I can even run Maudie on it easily....

I LIKE the Globe...and it is a hybrid with fatty tires..it's a truck...but why do I need 2 bikes????

I'm wondering...wondering...maybe should I sell the Globe? I need to make up for the hole I dug myself and lined with Ibex and Icebreaker

My Rambouillet suits me pretty well, and it's a great bike. But this summer there were two occasions when I had to leave it at the bike shop for adjustments and such. Each time took several days, during which I nearly went out of my mind wanting to ride and the weather was gorgeous. It was torture!
That made me think what would I do if (god forbid) my bike was severely banged up or stolen....I would be bikeless, and I would have no interest in buying just any bike off the shelf in some bike store. It took me months to get my bike set up with the components I wanted. They don't make Rambs anymore now, so I'd have to look for a used one in my size to replace it. They are not so common. So we're talking weeks, or months even, to replace my bike.
That's what made me decide to get a second bike. Then if one was out of commission or gone, I could keep riding in the meantime. I should have my second bike by February or March.

I had a Giant hybrid and wanted a road bike. So, bought the Trek road bike in July and decided I didn't need two bikes. I didn't need the hybrid anymore. Sold the Giant hybrid in August. By October I missed it and bought the first mixte. By November we had 2 more mixtes!!!

I didn't think I needed two bikes.

I like my fast road bike with narrow tires. I like to ride it on the rails to trails and go faster, longer distances, to the next town. I like my mixte(s) with the fatter tires and upright position. I like to ride it around neighborhoods. I need at least two bikes.

I should sell one bike. We have 2 people and 5 bikes.

If you sell your Globe, you will be buying another bike soon. I just betcha!

I would not commute on my road bike, too much can happen, would not feel as safe with it at work.

I'm also uncomfortable with the constant questions from coworkers because in its subtle understated way it screams "expensive custom Italian bike" so I prefer my commutermobile which is nice in its own way but non cyclists just think "oh, mtb, nothing much" heh heh.

I've taken the commuter (a GT Outpost trail) on some group rides or road rides when the road bike was in the shop. I'm rusty right now but when I'm in shape I can keep the back of the pack in view which is fine with me.

So I don't need another bike ...... woah, take a look at that one there

OK OK I get it....I sure did put an awful lot of love and attention into the Globe...I'll keep'er...Maybe I should put the orginial bars and saddle back on...

I'm just amazed at how much more comfortable I am on the road bike...!!!
And how much easier the hills are on that light bike with 27 gears...I shot up a U shaped ramp on Sunday and I was shocked at how easy it was...

On second thought, Elk, sell the Globe but keep the saddle, bars and grips. Then buy three mixtes and try to decide which one to put all of that on. I don't miss my hybrid anymore. The mixtes ride a whole lot better than the Giant.

You are now learning all about bikes and the difference in how they all feel! It's fun isn't it!

Hmmm.... how simple is your life otherwise? How much is it based on 'need?'

Because bikes are my transportation, having four of them makes sense (especially since I am a motor-moron, so if one needs work it can take me days to make it happen). It was having bikes that fit situations that enabled me to use the bikes more and more and now I'm 'between cars' and haven't felt the need to replace the Mazda.

I'm quite likely to be getting a folding one soon

Elk, your decisions on what bikes to have will be based largely on what kind of riding you do. If you have lots of hills where you live then obviously you won't want to get a single speed bike, or a heavy cruiser/comfort bike. If you do mostly flat paved highway riding you wouldn't really want a mountain bike for that.
My theory is to have a modest number of fine bikes in the household that suit the various purposes well, put a lot of love into those bikes, and put great parts on them over time. Sometimes getting some fine new parts for a bike you already have and making it work can be thrilling and feeling like you have a whole new bike.

I currently have 5 bikes. DH has 3. I regularly ride all except 1, and that one still serves a regular, specialized purpose (plus I'm attached to it).

DH rides all 3 of his at least once a week. He's trying to figure out if he can get it down to 2, but there is no discussion of a single bike in our house

We ride too much, and there's too much of a chance that one would be stolen or need replacement parts. DH commutes on his, so it's to his benefit to have a back up in case of a last minute repair/tire change issue.
