    Welcome everyone!

Re: Bear on the BRP - this summer on the Skyline Drive (just north of the BRP) I passed a bear - it was on my side of the road, right at the edge of the pavement. I must have missed it by less than 2 feet! Awesome experience. No, I did not stop to pet it!

A special Virginia welcome to youflygirl! We are always looking for more cyclists in these parts. You will enjoy TE - make yourself at home.

    Getting to know you

    Real name: Cheryl

Where do you live: San Francisco, CA

Explanation of your handle: Straightforward, not very clever. It was late and I couldn't think of anything.

Explanation of your avatar: On a training ride in Brentwood, Northern CA. It's one of the few photos of myself on my bike where I think I look fast.

    Age (general or specific): 32

Occupation: Advisor for international students at an art school

Favorite bike: As in what I'd like to own someday? Hmm... a Pashley Princess Sovereign and a Rivendell Glorius.

What's in your stable: 2006 Giant TCR (road), Electra Amsterdam Classic, 1964 Schwinn Collegiate 3-speed.

Fastest speed on a road bike: Downhill around 30 mph (I'm uncomfortable descending, and never knew how fast I was going until I got my bike computer working recently). This was somewhere along Bollinger Canyon RD, in San Ramon, CA. July 2007.

Another picture of yourself or your ride: None right now.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Can't think of any! I always feel too guilty to lie.

Most memorable moment on my bike: I've been cycling since Feb. 07, so I'm fairly new. My most memorable moment so far was completing my first century- America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride in Lake Tahoe.

Most fun ever had on a bike: Doing a bike pub crawl in downtown Sacramento on my Amsterdam Classic with a group of good friends.

I actually don't do too much riding within the City, except to this place called Park Chalet in Golden Gate park for brunch (and that's a pretty flat route). But I have been inspired to do some late night rides on occasion in the hillier neighborhoods on my Amsterdam, which is a 3 speed all-steel cruiser. Definitely sore the next day!

    finally getting to this part!

    Real name: Valerie

Where do you live: Eugene, OR

Explanation of your handle: An old nickname from working in kitchens. I was notorious for getting rowdy and er... bruising people up on occasion Someone decided to come up with pirate names for the crew, and this is the one I was given. It's stuck ever since.

Explanation of your avatar: My hair, when it gets longer, turns into little-kid pigtails.

    Age (general or specific): mid-twenties

Occupation: Inventory supervisor for a bookstore

Favorite bike: I'm in love with the Bianchi Virata and anything by Vanilla!

What's in your stable: Rosie, a K2 road bike; an old Univega (current project bike); Madelaine, an even older JC Penney 3-speed women's touring bike (more like a cruiser); and Addie, my Specialized Seattle Langster.

Fastest speed on a road bike: Downhill around 40 mph. I was lagging behind my bf and his friend on a chip-seal descent and was too afraid to look @ the computer It was also my longest ride and tallest climb at the time

Another picture of yourself or your ride: We never bring cameras, for some reason...

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: Oh my goodness- I've got plenty of childhood/teenaged lies, like those told in school and to parents. And then there are the things never said, which don't quite count as lies, right ? I also said the love thing to someone I didn't intend to... that was brutal.

Most memorable moment on my bike: My first "big" ride. After riding 20-milers on the bike path all summer, I opted into an 40 ml ride out on a country road (w/ 2 guys in much better shape- I got dropped a few times ). I didn't make it the entire route and we had to turn back early, but I had never felt equally so proud and exhausted in my life. That was the moment I learned about proper nutrition for biking

Most fun ever had on a bike: The first time my SO and I got to go out on his new road bike. His college roommate had been big into cycling (captain of the college team, local-team rider, nationals, semi-pro team, etc) and thus he hated the thought of riding a bike for pleasure. After boo-hooing about how 'lame and excessive' it was, he saw how much I loved to ride and got his own road bike. He's hooked (even raced his first race this last season)! I was, and still, so glad that we would be able to share something that important and awesome together.

ok, I've posted here a bit and still haven't done this, so here goes:

    Real name: Ellen

Where do you live? Cape Cod, MA

Explanation of your handle: TriMom is always taken on every site I've tried to use it so I just added a few numbers. They happen to be my birthday (2-17) and I used to tease my kids about never forgetting Mom's birthday now.

Explanation of your avatar: It's a club design for the North Shore Cyclopaths, a group my husband and I ride with in the summer.

    Age (general or specific)
    2.17.63. Aging up next season!

    Occupation: teacher

Favorite bike: right now it's my new road bike.

What's in your stable? 2008 Specialized Ruby, 2004 Quintana Roo Caliente (tri), and a 2002 Specialized Hard Rock.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? This past October I hit 45 MPH on a descent while riding the Great River Ride in Westfield, MA. It was one of the scariest things I have ever done. In the metric century there was over 11K feet of climbing, so there was a lot of descending too.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? will have to look for one.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told:
    not gonna touch this one!

Most memorable moment on my bike: It was during the Tri State Seacoast Century this past September. At about the 50 mile mark I got out of the saddle to climb up a small hill, and I mean real small. I was ready to blast up it when BOTH quads locked up with cramps like I have never felt before. I was clipped in and could not move either leg. My husband and a friend were right in front of me, I was in the middle of the road, and there were other riders and cars behind me. I yelled "I'm going down" because I didn't want anyone to crash into me, but I couldn't even go over on my side.

My husband had to unclip me and drag me over to the side of the road. Some kind neighbors ran and got me some ice, while another rider gave me her electrolytes. My husband kneaded and iced both quads for over 30 minutes before I could get up. Then we went and rode another 50 miles

    Real name: Maria

Where do you live? Denver, CO

Explanation of your handle: It's a variation on my kunya. A kunya is an honorific title in arab culture. Traditionally one's kunya is Umm or Abu then the name of the first born son although more modern thinking folks use the name of the first born child whether male or female. Both my kids names begin with the better B so I'm UmmBnB.

Explanation of your avatar: I have issues with organized religion

    Age (general or specific) 38

Occupation: HR Director for a large non-profit

Favorite bike: The one I'm currently riding wrt comfort - K2 T-9 Twister. My last bike was a Bridgestone RB-3. I had no idea how good that bike was and its long gone.

What's in your stable? I just got back on the bike after a 6+ year absence so I'm a one-bike gal at the moment.

Fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? I'm sure I had some fast decents years ago but don't recall them. Two weeks ago I hit 38mph coming out of Golden heading back to Denver.

Another picture of yourself or your ride? I don't have a single pic!

What is the biggest lie you've ever told: HA HA HA....ya right!

Most memorable moment on my bike: I used to ride RAGBRAI each year. It was soo much fun and the memories are fabulous, each and every one!
