    67 miles today ... IT'S HOT HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dh and I got on the tandem at about 6:45 a.m. for a 65 mile ride. When we stepped outside, it was already miserably hot. It was also very humid, which is unusual for So. Cal, yet it's been that way off and on this summer and especially so today.

We got in 67 miles for our longest training ride for the Amtrack century we're doing next Sat. We had to get those miles in and today was really the only day we had to do it, so no turning back. I'm amazed at how well we both did considering it was over 100 by the time we got back at 12:30. Weather.com said 102, but I heard people mentioning up to 108. We made sure we had plenty of fluids and used a sports bottle to constantly dowse ourselves with water, which we refilled three times. It's amazing how much pouring water on your head helps. (And soaking your jersey with it, and sports bra and shorts!)

We did a decent amount of climbing in there, too, about 3,500 ft, so I'm pretty confident we'll be alright for that century which should not be anywhere near 100 degrees and definitely less climbing.

Can't believe we did that on the hottest day of the summer. We're crazy, but it sure feels good to say I did it and didn't keel over in the process!

    hot

Good to hear your bike ride went well.

I did a ride in similar temps in January... I've never been so happy to get into my house!!!! It was 39C!!! This summer perhaps I won't bike in anything over 38C...

Good luck on the Amtrak Century...Where does it take you?

As we rode into our neighborhood I started fishing for the garage remote out of the back of Dh's jersey so I could open it as soon as humanly possible. As soon as I saw our house I said, "There's my house! That's my house! It's cool in my house. I'm going in my house. I have a house and it's cool and I'm going to be in it."

I kept saying all that as I walked in and fell over on the floor.

Today I was at the show grounds in San Jaun Capistrano where my daughters are doing a horse show this weekend. It was 108 and I think it promises to stay about that throughout the weekend. Ah yes. It will be a lovely weekend.

By the way, the Amtrak century starts in Irvine, CA and goes down to San Diego. Then you take the train back, hence the name.

jiffer... good news... I live in San Diego and the temps for next Sat are supposed to be back into the low to mid-80's! Plus you'll have breeze on the coast...

the only real climb is Torrey Pines... and if you're already doing 3500ft in a ride, you'll totally be fine! I ride the coast regularly and the route is not bad at all...

hope you have a great century and a fun and safe ride!
