    Back Pain

    To disable ads, please log-in.

I started running last week. I am doing a couch to 5K program from Beginnertriathlete.com because I want to be able to run my sprint tri in November. Today was the 3rd week. Last week I ran 3 minutes and walked 27 minutes and everything seemed fine. This week I am to run 6 minutes and walk the rest. I did my run/walk this morning but now my lower back has pain.

Is it becuase I need to build up my core? or does my body just need to get used to the running?

    back pain

There a numerous reasons for back pain:

tight muscles that attach to the spine such as hamstrings and psoas
weak muscles that control the spine - ie core
    poor or inappropriate foot wear
weak or tight muscles involved in running, that either don't fire properly, and then the muscles of the spine need to take over, typically glutes, but can be other muscles too.
    herniated discs
improper running technique, like leaning forward or twisting too much (which may also be related to any of the above too)

The best option is to get evaluated by a professional physiotherapist who knows running. You want to nip this thing in the bud before it becomes worse, and then you can't run at all ( i have seen this happen with some people).

    Good luck!
