    Maintenance Tri Training?

    To disable ads, please log-in.

    Hi Ladies,
I have a question maybe some of the more experienced triathletes can answer. As you all know,my partner and I finished our first sprint tri at the first of June.We are planning another sprint in September.I want to concentrate on cycling right now because I want to finish my first century ride and she wants to finish her first metric century.Any ideas on what would be a good maintenance schedule for running and swimming for July before cranking it up in August to prepare for a tri in early September?Due to our work schedules we did a lot of bricks to prepare for the first one and it's only tighter now,as my partner has taken a second job and I am looking for a second one until school starts in the fall.Any suggestions are welcome.THX

Well the answer all depends on what you are good at.

For example, I am a strong swimmer. I could swim maybe 2 times a month and keep my fitness level up. I am a weak runner though. If I let my miles drop or if I stop running, it takes me a long time to get back my fitness.

So, what is your strong point? Did it take you a fair amount of time to get good at either of those?

Well KSH,the bike is definitely my strong point,I could probably stay off the bike for a couple of months and still be good for at least 50-60 miles.Sooooo,I guess I'll be "hitting the bricks" for swimming and running.I finished my first tri in 2:45:01.My goal for the next one in September is 2:30 or less.I have also added strength training two days a week and am tightening up my nutrition plan to drop 15 lbs by then.

If you are strong on the bike then I would do shorter bike sessions during the week with a run off the bike, but once a week do a long bike to get ready for the century. And if you can get at least two swim sessions in a week that would be ideal. But of course I have no idea what your schedule is or what you have time for. If you need to cut one of those swims out to get an extra run in, then I would go that way.
Basically I would concentrate on making sure you have one long ride a week and three good runs- even if they are bricks off the bike. And then just fit whatever you can around it.
    Hope this helps..
    Denise
