Where I live I would never think about a double. I paid for everyone of those teeth on my triple and I'm going to use them. One of my favorite routes has a 22% grade on one hill. 15% is not out of the ordinary.

Same here SouthernBelle. Indy is flat, but just south of here are some really steep, short climbs that our local clubs like to ride for "fun" with grades in the 15-20% range. I use the term "fun" rather loosely of course. Even though I don't need the triple for most of my rides, I'm sure happy when I have it. I know some guys in my circle of cyclists who only ride with a double, even on those grades. I've started to pass a lot of them on the way up!![]()
Live with intention. Walk to the edge. Listen hard. Practice wellness. Play with abandon. Laugh. Choose with no regret. Continue to learn. Appreciate your friends. Do what you love. Live as if this is all there is.

When I chose a triple for my Trek Project One, lots of people I ride with wanted to know why. Yes, I rarely use it, but when I need it, it's there! It is a little harder to clean than a double, but other than that, I have had NO reason to regret getting the triple and plenty of times, I've been very happy to have it! (You might think of Iowa as flat, but not near the Mississippi, where I ride. We may not have mountains, but we have some BFH's! It's almost impossible to find a flat route around here.) Plus I would have died without the triple on Ride the Rockies. I can train on hills, but not altitude! Honestly, I had never heard of compact doubles when I got the bike or I might have considered it. Now, it's not worth the money to switch, since I am happy with the triple. I think it's great that there are so many options available!
